Message from PSSA Officials coordinator - call to officiate!

Joseph Shelly

Hi all!

We have a need for officials, and our Regional coordinator, Earl, wanted all coaches to reach out to their teams. Please let me know if you are interested in helping our swim community by becoming an official! Our region is in need and any help is greatly appreciated!

Here is the letter from Earl:

"

Introduction. Thank you for your interest in becoming a YMCA Swim Official.  Along with the coaches, lifeguards, and timers, officials serve an important role in running swim meets.  The following is a description of the classes, the cost, and how to register.

Eligibility.  Only individuals who are at least 21 years of age and are affiliated with a recognized YMCA swim team are eligible to enroll in these classes.

Class descriptions. Between September 17, 2024, and October 29, 2024, PSSA will be offering several classes.  These classes will be taught over Zoom.  The Zoom link will be sent to you after you register for the class. These classes are:

Y Swimming Orientation - Any person who wants to attend one of the Level 1 or Level 2 classes must attend one of these orientations. The one-hour class is an overview of the YMCA core values and mission statement as they apply to being a swim official, a review of facilities, equipment, and the minimum number of officials required to conduct a swim meet.

Important. You do not need to register in advance for this orientation.  These will be offered multiple times.  All you will have to do is attend one of these one-hour orientations.  The orientations will be held Tuesday, September 17th, Monday, September 30th, and Tuesday, October 22nd at 6:30 p.m.

Swim Official Level 1 – this is the YMCA entrance level class that teaches the basics of how to be a swim official with an emphasis on judging the races/events.  This class will be offered twice.  You can attend either Tuesday, September 24th, or Tuesday, October 29th.  Each class will start at 6:30 p.m.

Important. In addition to individuals new to officiating, any current Level 1 official interested in renewing their credentials should also take this class.

Swim Official Level 2 – this is the YMCA advanced class at focuses on how to start races/events, oversee other officials, and handle meet management.  To be eligible to take this class you must have been a fully certified YMCA Level I or USA Swimming (USA-S) official for at least one year and have served a minimum of 8 sessions as a fully certified YMCA and/or USA-S Swim Official.

This class will be held on Tuesday, October 3rd starting at 6:30 p.m.

Important. Those Level 2 officials wishing to renew their credentials can also attend this Level 2 class!

(Currently not-scheduled) Administrative Officials – this is a class that teaches individuals how to monitor the result of each race/event, ensure times are accurately documented, and assist Level 2 officials with the swim meet management.

Important. No class is currently scheduled, but a class could be arranged if the teams express an interest in holding an Administrative Official class. To request an Administrative Officials class, please contact one of the trainers listed on the PSSA website at Puget Sound Swim Association - PSSA Officials (gomotionapp.com).
