Feb 12 Update: Home meet recap, upcoming dates, initial banquet info

Joseph Shelly

Good afternoon Tritons!

Sorry, it feel like it's been a while since the last newsletter. This is probably the busiest championship season we've had, with all the meets and rescheduling of Y State, but I'm glad to say we are not just getting through it but we are also having a lot of fun and success while doing so!

Meet Recap

First off, a quick recap on the home meet. I'm happy to hear so many positive things about the scoreboard - it's been our project since about late 2022 and I'm grateful for all the help we had along the way! At our home meet, we had 63 new personal best times, with Esther Mesman holding the title of biggest drop with a 50.97 second drop in the 100 back, way to go!

As the name suggests, the Last Chance Qualifier was supposed to be the last chance to qualify for Regionals (though Y State will now be that true final chance). We had the following new Regional qualifying times:

  • Henry Jones in the 50 Free and 50 Fly
  • Gideon Carpenter Eells in the 50 Breast
  • Ella Inman in the 100 Breast
  • Rowan Johnson in the 50 and 100 Breast
  • Ole Lervick in the 200 Free
  • Langley Ludemann in the 50 Free and 100 Fly
  • Katherine Van Dyk in the 500 Free
  • Michael Veltri in the 100 Free
  • Merrick Weishaar in the 25 Free
  • Weston Weishaar in the 100 Fly and 100 Breast

Lots of success this season! Even if your swimmer did not qualify for Boise, everyone on the team has shown great improvement and more importantly greater comraderie and enjoyment of the sport! I always tell swimmers that may have had a rough race that a good swim is one that you can reflect and learn from, not necessarily one that has a green number on Meet Mobile.

Monthly Challenge

Our February Monthly Challenge is here! It is a food log - submit 2 weeks worth of a food log and collect your monthly challenge badge! I have printed food logs and shown examples at practice, and will do so again today. Food is important and learning to read nutrition labels and getting in the habit of being aware of what you consume is a great skill to have even outside of swimming. These food logs just need to be turned into me by the first week of March to be counted towards the monthly challenge totals.

Upcoming dates

  • Deadline for Y State is February 13th at 11:59pm - please sign up or decline the invite before then!
  • Deadline for Y Regionals is February 14th at 11:59pm (I pushed it back from the 13th).
  • Our Team Banquet is on March 14th at the Little Mountain Elementary / Mount Baker Middle School Cafeteria! Same place we had our winter potluck
  • No practice the Friday before Y State (February 28th)
  • No practice the Thursday/Friday before/on Y Regionals (March 6th and March 7th)

Our Team Banquet and Award Ceremony is an annual tradition our team has had for as long as I can remember. This will be another potluck styled event with an awards ceremony shortly after. The event would be starting at 6:00pm with 5:00pm doors opening. Signups will be coming soon.

Last year, we had one of our parents bring back another old tradition - the slideshow! If we have another parent that is willing/able to put together a slideshow and knows how to use transitions and add music, I would be happy to find a large TV to bring to the cafeteria. (The school district staff told me that their projector system was not able to be rented at this time). We would also need a bunch of pictures throughout the year - maybe we think about having a dedicated team photographer?!

We will start our taper the week from Y State. I recommend those not going to Regionals to carbo load that week, and those going to Regionals to carbo load the Monday before Regionals.

Thank you all for another great season, looking forward to see us end strong!
