March 3 update: Y State recap and schedule for practice this week
Good evening Tritons,
Just a couple of things this update, and I will section things off and try to make it easier to read:
Y State Recap
First off - we had an incredible showing at Y State, and I was happy to see so many great swims! We had some last minute extra Y Regionals qualifications, and many personal bests and top placements for our swimmers. I had another coach showing me the scores on meet mobile, and if they did do team points, it looks like we would have come in second place out of all the Ys in the state! I am happy to see all the hard work each swimmer is putting into each practice paying off in many ways. One of the most fulfilling thing about being a coach is seeing a swimmer touch the wall, smiling, and celebrating what they accomplished. Even the tough races, I noticed, were still great lessons for the future, and I appreciate our swimmers learning to turn everything into a learning opportunity.
I passed out the awards today at practice, and those that missed it will have their awards placed in the swimmer mailbox. Along with the awards, all swimmers that attended Y State received a 2025 Y State championship swim cap! I am a big fan of collectable swim gear, so I'm glad that they did that this year and hope this trend continues.
There were 350+ swimmers registered for this rescheduled Y State, and we had 33 Tritons signed up. There were 60 personal best swims on our team, and 66 top 8 placements for individual events (40 of which were top 3 and earned a medal)! We also had 3 gold medals and 1 silver for our relays.
There were some DQs, a couple of which I protested, and a bad call during the 12&U session. I think after I talked with the head ref, they talked with the other officials at the meet and ultimately decided that swimmers be given the benefit of the doubt with false starts. It is true that swimmers can be disqualified for false starts, but I argued that they should let the kid swim at the very least and not put a negative spotlight on something that should be empowering for our young swimmers. Y swimming should be about the kids and giving them a positive place to build themselves, not tear them down. I'm glad that our swimmer that was DQ'd went on to have a great meet and got a couple of medals and personal bests to make the most of the situation.
Overall good experience and I hope that more of us can make it to the next one, which is scheduled at KCAC on the final Saturday of January 2026!
Practice Schedule March
We WILL have practice on March 6th and March 7th for those NOT attending Y Regionals. Coach Artemiy has offered to give our swimmers some extra time in the pool at our normal practice times. Those that are going to Boise, I recommend taking Thursday off.
Monday, March 10th will be a combined practice and mentor/game day. We will have practice from 4:30-5:30, and have a game for about an hour after.
Tuesday we will return to a normal schedule.
Upcoming events/deadlines
- We will have our Banquet on Friday, March 14th
- I just opened the Spring Finale meet and re-uploaded the meet info. If there is enough interest (more than 10 swimmers), we will go!
- As stuff pops up, I will update our event page
- I am looking to prioritize LCM meets for our swimmers this Spring/Summer!
