December 15 Update: Winter potluck and upcoming events

Good afternoon Tritons,

We are getting closer to wrapping up 2025, and with that comes a last team update of the year! I hope that everyone is doing okay after all the flooding, and hopefully things are returning to normal. We are back to a mostly normal schedule here at the Y, but we do have a few upcoming events this month.

Let's start with the upcoming Winter potluck and sock exchange

The potluck is open to all swim team families (close relatives are welcome)

  • When: Wednesday, December 17th (practice canceled for the team dinner)
    • Event goes 5:00pm-7:00pm (Doors open 5:00pm, potluck start 5:30pm)
  • Where: Mount Vernon City Library
    • Parking is plentiful in their garage, same place as our September/Fall team potluck
    • address is 208 W Kincaid St, Mount Vernon, WA 98273
  • Who: All swim team members and close family are welcome - please bring food if you can!

The sock exchange will follow the food, probably around 6:30pm or as swimmers finish food. This part is swimmers only! To participate, please bring a sock or pair of socks with a small gift inside. The small gift can be a knick-knack or candy; be as creative as you want! The socks are gifted at random, so a neutral gift is best.

As socks are brought in, have the swimmers check in with Coach Joseph. Participants will be given a number and a matching number tag will be put on their sock. Swimmers will draw numbers around 6:30pm, and if they draw their own number, they will get to trade with someone else (as long as they aren't giving that swimmer their own sock as well). Once everyone has a new number, each swimmer can go grab their sock(s)!

Winter break

Winter Break will go from December 22-26, and December 31-January 2nd; no practice scheduled during this time. Normal schedules will resume on Monday, January 5th.

We will have combined practices on December 29 and 30 for those still in the area and are looking to swim! Those practices will be from 4:30-5:30pm.

Polar Plunge

Our Polar Plunge is on January 1st and I was shown something fun that is happening that day that we could join: https://birchbaywa.org/birch-bay-polar-bear-plunge/

Not our typical spot, but I think it could be something fun for our swimmers to say that they were a part of, especially if there are enough people to break the world record!

If you feel strongly one way or another, let me know your thoughts by sending me an email! I'll be reading through responses and will decide if we are joining by our potluck on Wednesday.

Side notes

I am looking to make a time trial session for our team to make up for the recently canceled meet last Saturday. I will update you as soon as I can confirm dates/times!

The planning committee is waiting on review this evening to send out their Y State meet announcement. I know they have been hard at work trying to get things underway, and have been proactive with making sure we can have the competition at KCAC. Some events have been canceled at the facility due to shifts in USA Swimming and USMS policy with the stuff happening in Texas. We don't think our Y State meet will be in conflict, so we are expecting to be there on January 24th. I'll keep you all updated as things progress.
