Jan 21 Update: Dryland program, January, and February!
Good afternoon Tritons,
We are coming up on our State meet this Saturday, and so another quick update as well as keeping you in the loop on things to come after!
- There is normal practice hours today! It is NOT combined (I heard some swimmers asking yesterday about a combined practice, we are not combining today).
- Thursday will be normal hours for Tidal Wave/Tsunami B, but Tsunami A will have early release. That is our 5:30-7:00 group on Thursday will instead be done at 6:30pm to ensure a light final practice before Y State
- No practice on Friday, January 23
- Normal hours resume on Monday January 26 as we gear up for the February and March meets
- Registration for our distance meet on February 8th is still open
- This meet requires a 200 Free time of 2:56.44 or faster to enter the 500/1000/1650 Free
- To enter the 400IM, a swimmer must have a 200IM time of 3:04.24 or faster
- Registration for our distance meet on February 8th is still open
- There is a last chance meet hosted by the Snohomish YMCA coming up as well. I'm sure more info will come after Y State.
- No practice on March 5-6 for Y Regionals as coaches will be traveling to Boise
- Y Regionals is on March 6th-8th
- The hotel block we have in place can be found through this link: Book your group rate for Skagit Valley YMCA Swim
- Check in is March 6th, check out is Sunday March 8th
- Using the hotel block is optional, you may choose alternative arrangements if they better suit your needs. Thought I would set up the opportunity though!
- Each year we get more and more qualifiers, and each year the standards get higher for the swimmers so I appreciate the efforts from the group! This meet is all about doing as many events as you can and doing the best you can, so I encourage those qualified to register for as many events as possible. If you aren't sure what events you would score the most in, I am happy to fill in the blanks.
Dryland Programming - Tidal Wave + Tsunami groups
I am excited to finally share that I have been in talks with one of our fitness instructors, Casey, who will be leading our dryland exercises starting next week, January 27! Casey was a swimmer on our team a few years ago, and has recently finished her BS in Kinesiology from WSU. She returns to the Y as a personal trainer and fitness instructor, also previously being a lifeguard and physical therapist aide.
For those chasing higher goals in swimming, strength and conditioning training is essential. Many of my peers who went to Y Nationals only attained their times through both consistent high effort in the pool, and a consistent gym schedule (usually on our own, whether that be self-guided or through a PE class at school).
This is the current outline:
Tuesday:
- Tsunami A: 4:15pm-5:15pm
- Tsunami B/Tidal Wave: 5:45pm-6:30pm
Wednesday:
- Tsunami A & B: 4:15pm-5:15pm
- Tidal Wave: 5:45pm-6:30pm
Friday:
- Tsunami A&B: 4:15pm-5:15pm
I will reconnect with Casey and make a seperate/additional post about dryland soon. There is no addtional fee, no extra charge, just more for our swimmers to help them reach their swim goals!
There is no planned dryland for our Riptide group, as I believe their focus should be entirely on stroke technique and feel during their practices, and additional workouts will only be a developmental overload. If a swimmer is close to moving up to Tidal Wave (i.e. they are about 11 years old and are near qualifying standards), that is when exceptions can be made.
As this is a new program, I will have high expectations with attention and respect given to our new strength and conditioning coach. I will reiterate this during practice to our swimmers today, but please do take advantage of this program by adhering to the Y Core values of Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Honesty. Attendance from the practice groups mentioned above is highly encouraged!
More info will come soon as we finalize the programming, until then stay tuned for more! As always, never hesitate to reach out with questions.
Looking forward to the future as our team continues to grow and develop as a whole!
