Meet Worker Information

Did you know it takes at least 65 workers to run each swim meet? We can't run a meet without your help, which is why each family is required to sign up to work during each of our swim meets (including Championships). Most positions require volunteers to work for at least half of each meet (meets are divided into two halves). Some positions may require you to work the entire meet.

Position sign-ups are on a "first come first served" basis, but you must select a job that you would be willing to work. We encourage you to sign up as soon as possible, so you have the best chance at working the position of your choice! We will make every effort to assign you to work in one of your preferred positions, but occasionally you may be needed elsewhere.

If a parent/guardian from a family does not sign up for a position, we will have no choice but to assign you where needed. If for some reason you are unable to fulfill your position, it is your responsibility to find another worker to cover for you. It is absolutely crucial that all worker positions are filled and assigned before the start of each meet so that the meet runs smoothly!

Parent/guardian involvement and support is essential for the success of our swim team. The swim meets are completely organized and run by parent/guardian workers. Without YOUR help, there is no meet!

HOW TO SIGN UP FOR A MEET POSITION

To sign up for a meet worker position, click on the "EVENTS" tab on the navigation bar at the top of our website (or click here) to view the meet schedule. Next to each meet, you will see the "Job Signup" button. Simply click the "Job Signup" button to select at least two different jobs that you would be willing to work. Thank you for being a meet worker!

DESCRIPTION OF MEET WORKER POSITIONS

Our meet worker positions offer a variety of opportunities and there is something for everyone! Most positions require no prior experience or training. We want you to have fun while supporting our swimmers, so don't forget to sign up in advance to have the best chance at working the position of your choice! Remember, it is mandatory to work each meet. If you do not sign up for a position, you will be placed where needed!

Each swim meet is divided into two halves. You must sign up to work for at least one half, but if you are able to work both, we would greatly appreciate it! More than one member of your family may sign up to work. Any and all help is welcome and appreciated!

STARTER:   Starts each event with the announcement of the age and stroke and the words "SWIMMERS TAKE YOUR MARK," pauses to make sure that all swimmers are motionless, and then gives an electronic sound or a blast of a whistle. He/She shall be the sole judge of FALSE STARTS and all false starts shall be restarted. Training is required for this position. (poolside; works the full meet)

CHIEF TIMER:   Organizes and briefs the Lane Timers on their duties prior to the meet and is in charge of the lane timers throughout the meet. Times all events with 2 stop watches in case other timers’ watches fail. Previous experience recommended. (poolside, standing job; home meets only)

LANE TIMER:   Times and records swimmer’s time per event using a stop watch. Each timer is provided a stopwatch and assigned a lane; there are three timers needed for each lane. All three times are recorded and the middle time becomes the official time. This job gives you the best view of the pool and the swimmers during their races! (standing job, poolside)

LANE MONITOR:   Assigned to a lane during ALL events to ensure each swimmer swims in the assigned order and heat (poolside)

MITE PARENT:   Takes group of "mites" (swimmers 8 and under) to the lane/heat they are assigned to swim. Supervises the "mite tent" or "mite holding area" during meets, makes sure all mite swimmers needed for each event are present and lined up accorrding to lane/heat, and gets mite swimmers to the ready bench/seats in the appropriate lane on time with caps and goggles. Mite parents are especially critical to the timely start of the meet and to keep the meet running smoothly! If you have a child 8 and under, this will also allow you to keep an eye on them so they don't miss their events! (mite area + poolside)

SCAN JUDGE:   Sits at edge of the pool in chairs and records finish of swimmers in each race. (sit down job, poolside)

SCORER:  Circles the median time on timer sheets to record the official time for each swimmer, records the order of finishes, and verifies the computer results. (sit down job, away from pool)

HEAT WINNERS:   Watches and determines the winner of each individual event heat and awards that swimmer a heat winner ribbon immediately following their event heat. With this position, you get to see the final laps of each race and brighten the winner's day with a ribbon! (poolside, home meets only)

RUNNER:   Responsible for obtaining and delivering the completed timer sheets, scan cards, and DQ slips for each race from the timers and judges at the starting blocks and delivering them to the computer area. Runners are recommended to wear shoes with good traction that work well on slippery wet surfaces. This job keeps you moving around at the poolside and the time passes quickly! (poolside and beyond, home meets only)

CONCESSIONS WORKER:   Assists with concession sales during home meets. (away from pool; home meets only)

COMPUTER/DATA ENTRY (4+ needed)  Responsible for entering data from time cards and verifying all data entered.  Training is required for this position. (sit down job, away from pool)

STROKES/TURNS JUDGE (4+ needed)  Judges rule on infractions on their side of the pool. They observe strokes, turns, and finishes to see that swimmers comply with requirements for that stroke. Training is required for this position. (poolside)
