14-year-old Sierrah Broadbelt outpaces national record setter, Crooks
While Jillian Crooks won the Women’s 100 SC Meter Freestyle Super Final with a top time of 56.01 on day three of the Cayman Islands National Swimming Championships 2023, she could not fend off rising star 14-year-old Sierrah Broadbelt in the Women’s 200 SC Meter Butterfly Super Final.
In the Women’s 200 SC Meter Butterfly Super Final, Broadbelt outpaced Crooks with a time of 2:17.77, with Crooks following in second place with a time of 2:17.80.
Crooks took this loss graciously, however, and had the following to say about Broadbelt on social media:
The reaction shown by national record-setter Crooks, both in her comment and with hugs on social media, demonstrates Crooks’ maturity as a competitive swimmer. It is also the type of permanent disposition that will allow Crooks to go far in her swimming or in any other career.
As for Broadbelt, the Women’s 200 SC Meter Butterfly Super Final was an addition to her impressive record as a young swimmer, having previously broken a national record in the Girls 13-14 100 metre and striking gold in a previous CARIFTA game in Barbados.
Broadbelt was also one of four swimmers nominated by their club coaches to represent Cayman’s swimmers in the Queen’s 16th Baron Relay as it passed through the Cayman Islands on its way to the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Cayman swim fans should keep encouraging Broadbelt as a rising star. A lot more success is to come from her.
