Hilton seizes CARIFTA open water title
Dominic Hilton outpaced a field of 85 swimmers on Monday, 10 April., along Caracas Bay in Curaçao, to take the CARIFTA Open Water 5K race.
Hilton finished with a time of 1:02:15.1, ahead of fellow Cayman swimmer Will Sellars, who took second place and Connor MacDonald in fourth.
Speaking with the Compass after his victory, Hilton said initially he didn’t think he would win the race.
“It was very unexpected,” he said. “I put in a lot of hard work but there were a lot of really fast competitors who were much older than me and had more experience, but it’s all about following the rules and performing a good technical race.”
He noted that strong currents affected his time but he was not bothered by jellyfish as some swimmers were.
“You could feel the current going down and then coming back you were really fighting it,” he said. “No jellyfish for me, but I heard others got stung.”
Also competing for Cayman in open water was Teagan Nash, who finished sixth overall among female swimmers.
Maria Westin placed 14th, ahead of her younger sister Felicity, who finished 20th.
