Coach Doug - National

Doug began his swimming career in summer league at the age of 8, but quickly graduated to competitive swimming at SwimAtlanta in Georgia where his family was a founding member of the club team. By the time he retired at 25 he had exceeded his goal of winning an Olympic Medal. He had won two Olympic Gold Medals and a Bronze Medal from the 1988 and 1992 Olympics Games, and was part of a World Record Setting Relay in the 1988 Olympic Games. At the University of Texas at Austin, Doug swam for legendary Coach Eddie Reese for 5 years and was part of 3 NCAA National Championship winning teams, where he was a two-time National Champion in the 200 Freestyle and a National Champion in the 200 Backstroke. He participated in 9 NCAA Championship winning relays over his collegiate career. In 1993, Doug returned home to Georgia and SwimAtlanta where he began his now 33 year coaching career for Chris Davis who played a pivotal role in coaching Doug as a high schooler. Doug was inducted into the Longhorn Hall of Honor in 2006, the Georgia Aquatic Hall of Fame in 2012, and the Texas Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame in 2018. During his 26 years coaching for SwimAtlanta, he coached several Olympic trial qualifiers, a Latvian Olympian, a Paralympian, and American Olympian Amanda Weir, who at the age of 31 won a Silver Olympic Medal in her third and final Olympic Games. While in Atlanta, he was instrumental in the orchestration of the Atlanta Swim Across America event which raises money for cancer research, treatment, and development. Doug relocated to San Antonio in 2019 to become the Assistant Aquatics Director and Head Coach of AAAA-Northeast. In 2022, he added to his successful coaching resume when AAAA-Northeast’s own Olympic Trial qualifier, Carli Cronk, set the world Deaflympic record for having won the most number of gold medals by an athlete in a single edition of the Summer Deaflympics with a haul of 12 gold medals. Doug believes the key to great coaching is to have fun with the athletes while challenging them to push themselves beyond their comfort zone. Doug is married to a former competitive swimmer with 3 grown children, all of whom swam competitively since the age of 5. Two of the children followed in Dad’s footsteps; one coaches for AAAA-Northeast and the other is a swim coach in Charlotte, NC for Mecklenburg Swim Association. The Gjertsen family obviously loves the sport of swimming. When not involved in swimming, the family is devoted to their 3 Doodles and a little Lab.

Coach Daniel - Senior 1

Coach Daniel Roa is originally from Bogotá, Colombia. Coach Daniel discovered his passion for swimming at the age of 4. Coming from a family of swimmers, he was first coached by his father, who not only guided him as an athlete but also inspired him to pursue a coaching career from a young age.

In 2010, Coach Daniel moved to Florida to continue his swimming career while learning English, and two years later, he relocated to California to attend Golden West College and compete at the collegiate level. His dedication and talent earned him a spot on the Colombian National Team at just 16 years old, where he proudly represented his country in both pool and open water competitions.

Daniel brings over 13 years of coaching experience, having most recently coached for the Mission Viejo Nadadores in California. Throughout his career, he has developed athletes who have gone on to compete at Junior National and National levels, as well as multiple Olympic Trials qualifiers.
As a coach, Daniel is committed to guiding swimmers not only in their athletic pursuits but also in their personal growth. In his own words: “I feel passionate every day to help athletes find the best version of themselves in and out of the pool.”

Coach Jeremy - Senior 2

Jeremy is a 48 year old proud father of four teenage boys. This is his second time coaching with AAAA NE. Jeremy has served as the lead coach for both the Senior and Bronze groups and assisted with the National team.
Before joining AAAA NE, Jeremy was the head coach of multiple summer league teams and helped to build strong fundamentals and foster a love for the sport at the grassroots level. After finishing competing at the collegiate level, Jeremy ran supplemental college training sessions and took on the role of Head Coach for the year-round YMCA club team in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Under his leadership, the team produced over two dozen state qualifiers and one US Open qualifier.
With decades of experience both in and out of the water, Jeremy brings a deep passion for swimmer development, team culture, and competitive excellence at every level of the sport.

Coach Alyssa - Senior 3

Coach Alyssa started her swimming journey club swimming in Georgia for Swim Atlanta at the age of five and continued all throughout highschool. After highschool, she attended the University of North Georgia for two semesters and then relocated to Texas in 2020 to be closer to family. In the fall of 2024, she began assistant coaching for AAAA-NE and helped out with the groups Blue and Silver. This summer, she began assisting with Senior 3 and Yellow and has loved every second. She enjoys spending time with her family and their four dogs, and spending time outdoors when the weather is not too hot.

Coach Matthew - Gold

Coach Matthew began swimming at the age of six, with the Leon Valley Blue Marlins. In 2014, Leon Valley decided to close down the pool the Marlins trained at. Matthew, along with many members of the team, went to many city hall meetings and town halls to protest. He asked his mother to make a mascot suit to aid the effort to keep the pool open, and thus Merlin the Marlin was born. After ensuring the pool remained open, Matthew starred as Merlin in every 4th of July parade and every big meet until the Marlins were eventually disbanded in 2017. Matthew began training with the AAAA Nadadores in 2017, swimming under Coach Don Walker. The following summer, Matthew joined the Northchase Piranhas as both an athlete and coach. He continued coaching summer league until 2024, becoming Head Coach of the new Leon Valley Lionfish in 2023, training at the same pool he protested to keep open almost ten years prior.
Matthew swam all throughout high school and beyond and currently swims with the U.S. Masters team in his free time.
Matthew recently graduated from NVC with an A.S. in Biology, and is continuing his education at UIW with a B.S. in Biochemistry. Matthew hopes to one day have a career in sports physiology research and coaching. Matthew endeavors to share his deep passion for our sport with every athlete he works with. Matthew has a wide variety of hobbies, ranging from theatre to 3D print and design. When not at the pool, he can most often be found working out or playing tennis with his friends.

Coach Sarah - Silver/Yellow

Coach Sarah graduated from UTSA with her B.A. in 2021 and has been coaching at the club and summer league levels for 7 years at AAAA-NE & Timberwood Park summer league. Her swimming journey began at age 5 with summer league, moving on to club swimming at Alamo Area Aquatics, and being a part of the varsity team at MacArthur HS prior to a shoulder injury in her junior year. Sarah started coaching in 2019 and worked with ages 5-12 in the Developmental, Silver III & Gold III groups in both an assisting and lead capacity, before taking a step back to spend time with her family. Sarah and her husband have 2 boys, ages 2 years & 7 months, and 3 golden retrievers. Sarah spends most of her free time at the park, the pool, or the bay, soaking up as much outside time as possible with her children. My family is wholeheartedly involved in the sport, with the boys frequently joining on deck for both practices & meets.  After 20+ years in the swimming world, Sarah is excited to be back on deck at AAAA!

Coach Vina - Navy

Hi! I’m Coach Vina, and I’m currently a student at UTSA. I grew up swimming for AAAA-NS and John Marshall High School, and I still love competing with USMS Masters. Before joining AAAA-NE last fall, I coached at Braun Station Summer League and Emler Swim School. Outside the pool, I enjoy open water swimming and baking, but my favorite place to be is on deck coaching the kiddos!

Coach Vicki - Blue

Coach Vicki has been coaching with AAAA NE for four years. She started as an assistant for blue and yellow and is now beginning her third year as the lead coach for the blue group. Vicki grew up participating in summer swim leagues as a child in her neighborhood in Austin, Texas. While she enjoyed swimming, she spent most of her energy on club soccer. She still loves the game of soccer and holds multiple coaching licenses and has coached all levels from 8u to professional indoor. She attended Trinity University and graduated with degrees in accounting and communications. Vicki has three grown children; a son who works as an engineer in Dallas, Texas; a daughter who attends Tarleton University as an animal science major and plays on the soccer team; and another daughter who will be starting at SMU this year as a theater acting major. Vicki began coaching swim in summer league in her neighborhood. She brings 14 years of swim coaching experience to AAAA and many years of life experience. Coach Vicki believes swimming is an incredibly important life skill and continues to devote her time, energy, and love to help kids reach their full potential and build confidence in the water.

Coach Adrian

Adrian Montoya is a dedicated swim coach with a lifelong passion for the sport and a proven record of excellence both in and out of the pool. A high school All-American and four-year letterman in college, Adrian’s competitive career includes setting three records and qualifying for the 2000 Olympic Trials.
Now a devoted husband and father of two, Adrian brings the same discipline, focus, and love for swimming to his coaching as he did to his own training. He believes the best part of swimming isn’t just the competition—it’s the lessons learned along the way: perseverance, teamwork, and personal growth.
With a commitment to helping athletes reach their full potential, Adrian inspires swimmers to chase their goals, embrace challenges, and carry the values learned in the water into every area of life.

Coach Henry

Swimming has always been a part of my life, and I've grown up doing summer swim since kindergarten. I swam club throughout middle school, and swam varsity at Pieper High School for three years. I was also on the Pieper varsity water polo team for all four years of high school, and played club water polo with AAAA. Most recently I was a coach for the Timberwood Park Tigersharks summer swim team, where I discovered my love for coaching. I am passionate about working with kids and helping them improve their swimming and team building, all while having fun. I also aim to motivate them to be the best they can both athletically and character-wise, and encourage them to build each other up! I am currently going into my first year of college at Northeast Lakeview. Can't wait to see y'all on the pool deck!

Coach Angel

As a lifelong swimmer, I have been immersed in the sport from my early days swimming in rivers, to competing at the high school level. This journey has instilled in me valuable lessons, most notably the importance of overcoming personal challenges to achieve success in the water. With three years of coaching experience, ranging from beginners to advanced competitive swimmers, I have developed a deep understanding of how to foster growth, resilience, and technique in athletes.
It is an honor to serve as a coach for the NEISD swim team. I am excited to bring my passion and expertise to this talented group, and I look forward to guiding our swimmers to new heights in the upcoming season!
