Final Report from the YMCA National Championships

The YMCA National Championships concluded on Saturday much the same way the first 4 days went…spectacular.

Highlights from the final day prelims session.

100 free – Elise swam a best time of 53.16 and Etta qualified for the D final for 15 & Under swimmers with a time of 53.44.

200 fly – Addy qualified for the C final and Sebestian qualified for the B final.

100 breast – Drew qualified for the A final and Tanner qualified for the C final.

400 free relay – The boys swam right on their seed time of 3:13. The big swim of the morning was the girls relay. Samara, Addy, Etta, and Kiersten combined to swim 3:27.8, a team record by almost 2 seconds, qualifying for the A final. Of note in that effort Samara, on her birthday, led off with a 52.6 in her 100 free, her first time under 53, and Etta went a 51.9, her first time under 52.

Highlights from the finals session.

Kiersten started our night with a great mile, going 17:03, to place 2nd. Her swim also broke the team record by 12 seconds.

Next, Etta dropped about half a second from her morning swim to go 52.8 in the 100 free.

In the 200 fly, Addy dropped time from the morning going 2:06.6 to place 21st and Sebastian won the B final, placing 9th with a time of 1:49.9.

In the last individual event of the meet, Tanner continued to drop time in the 100 breast going 57.0 to place 20th and Drew went a 54.7 to place 3rd.

The 400 free relay concluded our swimming. Samara, Addy, Elise, and Kiersten put together another great swim, going 3:28 to place 7th. Of note, after swimming the 1650 earlier in the session, Kiersten anchored the relay with a 50.9 split, her first time under 51.

The meet overall…unbelievable, overwhelming, wow

Without question OSHY best YMCA Spring National Championships ever. In the combined standings we were 15th, on the girl’s side we were 12th, and on the boy’s side we were 25th. On the OSHY team, we take pride in being able to do everything. For the 2nd year in a row, we had swimmers compete in every event of the meet. Out of all the events, the only events that we didn’t score or get a finals swim were the 200 back and the 200 medley and 400 medley relays and in each of those we just barely missed.

We had

  • A National Champion, Kiersten in the 1000
  • 4 other “A” finalists  (Top 8) in individual events – Kiersten 200 free and 1650 free, Drew 100 breast and 200 breast.
  • Two “A” final relays - girls 400 free and 800 free relay
  • Three B final (Top 16) individual swims – Emma 100 back and Sebastian 100 fly and 200 fly
  • One B final relay – girls 200 free relay
  • Nine C final (Top 24) individual swims – Addy 100 fly, 200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM, Samara, 50 free, 100 back, Drew, 50 free, Kiersten, 500 free, and Tanner, 100 breast
  • Three other Top 24 relays – girls 200 and 400 medley relays, boys 400 medley relay
  • 9 individual team records – Samara – 50 free, Kiersten – 500 free, 1000 free, 1650 free, Drew 50 free, 100 back, 200 breast, and Sebastian, 100 fly, 500 free.
  • 6 relay team records – girls 200 free relay (Samara, Kiersten, Addy, Rylie), girls 400 free relay (Samara, Addy, Etta, Kiersten), girls 800 free relay (Etta, Addy, Elise, Kiersten), boys 200 free relay (Tanner, Drew, Braden, Sebastian), boys 200 medley relay (Drew, Tanner, Sebastian, Braden) and boys 400 medley relay (Drew, Tanner, Sebastian, Braden)

And as unbelievably spectacular the swimming in the pool was years from now the memories will be of all the other things

  • Ethan’s winning almost every hand in poker one night.
  • Kiersten and Etta swimming in the outdoor unheated pool.
  • All 5  Twilight movies.
  • Jenga towers before heading to swim
  • Ribeye steak barbeque contests
  • Ping pong and pool games
  • Kiersten’s tattoo parlor
  • Jay dumping bag tags in Kiersten’s lane during the 1650 free
  • Drew’s homemade eggnog

And finally, a special thanks to Amy G for spending a week cooking, cleaning, and taking care of all of us. Without her, we wouldn’t have had such a wonderful week.
