Coach Randy Coutts Bio: "I had a typical Southern California upbringing by growing up between Bonita and Chula Vista which was called Sunny Vista. I started swimming with AAU, which is now USAA Swimming, at the age of 12. I continued swimming at Hilltop High School. I earned 5 gold medals, 4 CIF records in 3 years of high school. I attended SDSU on an athletic scholarship in swimming. I had a very successful swimming career with multiple school records and swam in NCAA Division I Championships. I found that I enjoyed rough water swimming and from high school to age of 30 swam La Jolla Rough Water and Oceanside Rough Water competitions. I qualified as a California State Beach Lifeguard at 18 by swimming a 1,000 yd. ocean swim and continued to win every requalification swim for 12 years. My early education in coaching swimming came with helping my high school coach write all the swim workouts. I started coaching swimming at Patrick Henry High School while still attending SDSU. They went on to win 2nd place at San Diego CIF Championships. I went back to Hilltop High School and taught History, Health, Family Life and coached water polo and swimming for 2 years. I was the Head water polo coach at Mt. Carmel High School for 4 years. We earned 2 league titles, 2 second places in CIF and 1 National title in 18 and underage group. My philosophy is to introduce people to the sport of swimming, and I believe that they will have a sport for life. I treat each swimmer as an individual with their own set of goals. Not everyone will be a champion, but swimming can make them a champion in their own lives. With my mathematical mind, I have discovered that swimming is based on equations of distance times and yardage. I am always amazed at how people respond to my motivation. I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from SDSU in Physical Education and History. I hold a standard secondary teaching credential. My most valuable education for coaching Masters Swimming is the opportunity I had to work with 8 different coaches and levels including 4 Olympic Swim Coaches."
