“Pacific Masters envisions a diverse swimming community embracing inclusivity and an environment in which individuals of all backgrounds feel welcome and safe in U.S. Masters Swimming activities.” Pacific Masters Swimming (PMS)

Members of Chico Masters agree with PMS, and recognize and appreciate the privilege of participating on an active, inclusive, and community driven swim team. There are four components to reach our mission: health/fitness, social, community service, and competitions.

Health and Fitness

Attending practice consistently and engaging in sound workouts are keys to success and achieving improved physical fitness and wellness. The coaching staff will…

  • Share on-deck coaching explanations about basic training concepts

  • Provide a wide variety of workouts that emphasize different aspects of training

  • Administer simple performance assessments

  • Give individual feedback regarding progress and goal setting

  • Share information about wellness, including physical, mental, and emotional benefits, are shared in emails with links to pertinent articles and experts in our sport.

Social

Team building and social connections are encouraged to establish and maintain a positive team environment. In our effort to build team unity we have:

  • Birthday recognitions and morning brunch celebrations

  • Seasonal team potlucks

  • Book Club

  • Holiday “Secret Swim Elf” activity and party

Community Service

There are many ways that we come together as a group and serve our community:

  • CASA support through our dues and other efforts to support local swimming

  • Special Olympics with volunteer coaches and swim meet involvement at the yearly regional competition.

  • Omega Nu events that support children’s programs in our county

  • Lifeguards and other volunteer jobs at the Chico Tri event at Black Butte Lake

  • USA Swimming “Swim Across America” to support cancer research.

  • Support for a new aquatics’ facility is a constant factor and need in our community.

Swimming Competitions and Triathlons

Attending swimming competitions that are out of town has been difficult for our group with growing interest in attending more in the future. Triathletes compete in events regularly. In the meantime:

  • We have “mock” swim meets

  • Work on stroke mechanics, practice starts, turns and finishes to prepare for future pool competitions

  • We prepare for open water races

  • Personal stroke improvement is accomplished through:

    • on-deck coaching explanations and individual feedback

    • wide variety of workouts that emphasize different aspects of stroke technique with drills and assessments

    • videotaping and analysis of stroke technique

    • Information about stroke mechanics is shared in emails with links to YouTube videos and experts in our sport.
