2024 CANADIAN OLYMPIC TRIALS

Emma Hesterman

Congratulations to Wells and Lucy who attended the fastest competition in the country

2024 Canadian Olympic Trials

(13-19 May, 2024)

Not only was it an inspirational competition for everyone to be a part of, they both rose to the challenge and excelled all week albeit both of them trying to get well from sickness.

Lucy (15) made best times in most of her time-trial swims and placed 16th place in the 100 Back (13-18); an outstanding performance with swimmers who are 3 years older than her.

In the Junior Category (13-18) Wells (17) came 10th in the 100 Back, 8th in the 50 Free but his most outstanding swim on the very last day of competition (Day 7)  was in the 100 Fly, where he was going in 3rd into the Final with 2 UCSC boys placing 1st and 2nd.   We made some changes from his morning prelim swim and he followed his race plan perfectly and came through and out-touched both boys to win Gold.   It was an oustanding swim of physical strength and mental determination.    From this swim, Wells came in under the cut for the Jr Pan Pacific Games and on Friday, he was selected as 1 of 10 boys across Canada to represent CANADA at the Junior Pan Pacific Games in Canberra, Australia.  He will be leaving on his 18th Birthday on the 12th August for the staging camp and then onto the Games.

CLUB RECORDS

Wells made an age group club record and overall club record (This was Finlay's record) in the 100 Fly with a time of 00:54.30

Lucy also broke the Girls 15-16 Club record and overall club record in the 100 Back in 01:04.93 and the 15-16 Girls Club record in the 100 Fly in 01:06.34.

Alumni swimmers Finlay Knox (Maverick team member 2008 - 2019) and Justin Lisoway (Maveick team member 2006-2019)  were also at the competition.

Finlay re-qualified for the Olympics in the 200 IM and for the 4x100 Free and Medley Relays aswell as coming under the Olympic Qualifying time in the 100 Fly.   Justin placed 8th in the 100m Breast Final.   Justin is now retiring from swimming after spending 5 years at the University of Hawaii and a very successful swimming career on the NCAA circuit.
