Competitive Team Tryouts

Junior Barracudas

The Junior Barracudas program is a pre-competitive swimming program for children aged 6 to 13 years old. The Junior Barracudas program focuses on improving stroke technique, developing body awareness, and building swimmer endurance and is organized into six levels:

The skill content in upper levels of the Junior Barracudas programming overlaps with the entry levels of the competitive programming. Therefore, while beneficial to complete all levels of Junior Barracudas prior to transitioning into competitive, it is not required.  Typically, swimmers 10 years of age or younger are ready to transition around Level 3 and swimmers 11 years of age or over are ready to transition around Level 4.

We typically hold 4 sessions per year - fall, winter, spring, and summer. During the fall, winter, and spring we swim at the Nepean Sportsplex and Walter Baker Community Center. In the summer we swim at the Nepean Sportsplex, Crestview Community Center, and Katimavik Community Center.  Also in the summer, we host week long summer camps, details for which can be found on our Summer Skills Camp Information Page.

FIND OUT YOUR SWIMMER'S LEVEL

Returning Swimmers: Please check your End of Session Progress Reports for the levels you will register your swimmer(s) in. If you no longer have this report, please email [email protected].

New Swimmers: Please complete a stroke assessment so that we may place your swimmer in one of the six levels.

Stroke Assessments: Because we are a pre-competitive program, our levels differ from city and learn-to-swim programs.  We invite you to complete a stroke assessment so we can confirm your swimmer's level of best fit. There is no cost to attend a stroke assessment, and it will take approximately 10-15 minutes.   We offer stroke assessments on an ongoing basis.  If all the currently listed stroke assessments are full please check back.  We offer them on an ongoing basis, opening a new batch of stroke assessments for registration at 8 AM on the 1st of each month.

Junior Barracudas Program Levels

The table below outlines what swimmers will be working on in a given level within the Junior Barracudas program.

Level

Description

BB

Beginner Barracudas will focus on their core strength and body awareness in the water, becoming comfortable with relaxed and rhythmic breathing, conquering the streamline, and focus on proper kick technique and strength.

Session Length: 30 minutes, twice a week

1

In Level 1, swimmers will focus on freestyle and backstroke components, with an introduction to the whip kick and dolphin motion. Wall transitions and starts will be introduced here and, as with all our levels, it will centre on core and kicking strength.

Session Length: 30 minutes, twice a week

2

In Level 2, swimmers will continue to focus on full stroke freestyle, backstroke, and kicking abilities. An introduction to breaststroke and butterfly components, competitive-like wall transitions, and starts will round out this level.

Session Length: 45 minutes, twice a week

3

In Level 3, swimmers will focus on putting together full stroke breaststroke and butterfly, and also practice on being strong kickers. Key points (such as streamlines off of the walls, underwater pull outs, turns, and breathing patterns) will be a significant part of this level.

Session Length: 45 minutes, twice a week

4

In Level 4, swimmers will focus on building endurance in the water, and improving on current stroke technique. The skills and techniques learned in the first four levels will continue to be improved upon and “put to the test” by having to do them while tired.

Session Length: 60 minutes, twice a week

5

Level 5 is for swimmers who are ready for a greater practice challenge. Technique correction will, of course, continue to be a focus in these levels.

Session Length: 60 minutes, twice a week
