Paseo Aquatics - News & Notes - Week of May 20, 2013
MASTERS MIXER
Congrats to all those who competed in the 1st Annual PASEO AQUATICS MASTERS MIXER-- and what a fantastic day it was!
We saw a couple of Dads rip off sub-one minute 100 Frees-- Tri Swimmers using flip turns for the first time-- Coaches taking on the Youth swimmers in a fight to the finish relay-- and much more!!
The turnout was great-- and the energy created by swimmers and spectators even greater. We were told by some that the Relay Races could be heard well beyond the tennis courts.
Some highlights from the event:
RICK FRIEDMAN kicked off the first-ever Master Mixer race by taking first place in the Mens 100 Freestyle with a ballistic .57!
STEFFEN LAND, not to be upstaged, came within an arm's length at the finish, posting a .58! Steffen, however, would have his moment in the sun by claiming the Mens 50 Freestyle over Rick in another gut-wrenching finish.
MIRIAM KILBY dusted off her racing suit to sweep several of the Women's events, including the 100 IM and 50 Backstroke.
For all the highlights and accolades awarded the Masters Group, it's possible after all was said and done, the morning may have belonged to the Paseo Aquatics Youth Team.
4 Relay teams comprised of the Swim Team's fastest sprinters took on 3 Masters squads and the Paseo Aquatics Coaches-- and swept all four races!
The Relay between the Coaches and the Paseo Aquatics "C" team came down to an absolute screamer with Coach Chris racing out to a 5 body-length lead. But irony can be a cruel thing, as he watched his own swimmers one-by-one disintegrate that margin. The crowd roared as Coach Mikaela and Holly Cusumano duked it out on the final lap, where the student out-touched the teacher by a hair, with both swimmers churning out Personal Bests.
The "D" Youth team of Hannah Siegel, Thomas Gleason, Ben James and Vincent Broz held their own against the Masters "C" squad of Miriam Kilby, Angie Morgen stern, Beth Giarrizzo and Robert Morgenstern, distancing themselves in the 3rd and 4th legs.
In the "B" Relay, Youth prevailed again as Alexandria Duran, Maddie Broz, Steffen Land and Ryan Davis outswam the Brett Custodia, Brandon Stein, Charlie Cusumano and Robert Ryken Masters "B" squad.
And in the long-anticipated "A" Relay, the speed of Erin Niemi, Christina Taylor, Sonaly Wintermute and Julia Wolf proved too much for "A" Masters Rick Friedman, Steffen Land, Tucker Brown and Mark Borchetta, as the top-ranked Youth team pulled away for a convincing victory.
Congratulations to all who competed-- and to those who came out to show their support. The response to the event was overwhelmingly positive-- and all indications are this will become an annual race.

PALM SPRINGS MEMORIAL DAY MEET
The Palm Springs Memorial Day Meet is this Friday-Sunday, May 24-26. We have a large group making the trip, including several swimmers competing in the 400 Meter Freestyle Friday evening.
For those not arriving until late Friday, the team will meet for breakfast Saturday morning at the Courtyard Marriott hotel @ 7:00AM. This will be ground zero for all competing swimmers each morning. Hotel address as follows: 1300 E. Tahquetz Canyon Way Dr., Palm Springs, CA.
Even swimmers who do not compete until the afternoon session are required to meet at 7:00AM for the team breakfast. It represents the only time of the day when all swimmers will be in one place at one time. Team unity is very important-- particularly on a road trip.
PASEO AQUATICS vs SUMMIT SEALS SWIM MEET
The upcoming swim meet vs the Summit Seals will be held Sunday morning, June 9th.
Sign-ups have already begun and will be covered in more detail at this Wednesday's team meeting. All swimmers must be registered with Coach Mikaela and/or Coach Heather to compete. This meet is open to ALL group levels and ages.
