Jr. 2

Hello Paseo Families,

This has been a long time coming to send out an update on the kids and the team.

First, I want to thank all the swimmers, parents, and coaches for supporting me after getting sick last summer.  Not knowing the future, I fought to get my health under control and return to the team I love and the sport I have spent most of my life involved with.

I hope I demonstrated a "Never Give UP" attitude to everyone.

Our team has been through some tough times this season, but the swimmers who were ready to perform have done so brilliantly.

Watching so many of the Champs kids all improve and even qualify for multiple Top 10 Times in So. Cal Swimming was a highlight of all the coaching staff.

Seeing our younger team just take charge of the meets and AG/Championships made my heart get even stronger.

After saying goodbye to Coach Carman who married another coach and former Paseo swimmer, Mr. David Kugler, in a beautiful Christian wedding that I attended with Coach Konrad, was a major highlight of the year for 2 of our friends and such wonderful people.

Upon returning to the JR Program to stabilize the loss of Coach Carman and Damien, having the opportunity to work with Coach Harrison, our youngest Coach.  This was also a moment in time that gave me as the oldest coach in the program a renewal of faith in the younger generation of coaches. Not only did he hold the groups together, they were thriving and ready for more.

We divided up the work and got busy.  I took the JR-2 Kids, He took the JR-1 Kids and Discovery. As a staff, I feel we worked well together and have completely changed the level of swimming in the JR programs.

Watching Brooklyn Cross break 3 team records from the early years of Paseo was amazing.  Knowing that she missed qualifying for AG/Champs by only .3 10ths of a second and being only 8 yrs. old, again makes my heart stronger.   Watching Lucy Dennis complete her 1st 100 yd Butterfly to a Standing Ovation from the officials was the moment I think I realized the incredible potential of the Jr Kids.

Keeping Keira Lowe in JR-2 and seeing her get the 50 Free and 50 Fly time down 5-6 seconds was worth the struggle.  Watching Eileen Kim improve in almost every event was worth pushing extra hard. Seeing Samuel Rayes go from JR1 to become one of the top Jr2 swimmers in only 5 months was worth the time spent with them.  The older JR2 kids Garret, Leon, Alex, Jordan, Dobryna, Amelia;  all became competitive athletes. This past year was well worth the time I was able to spend with them.

To watch Laura Gulacsy once again become one of the top Swimmers in the group, was worth pulling out a few hairs on my head this season.  With almost 30 kids swimming in this group, I just cannot get every name on here.  But realize we have another 20 + kids that are buying into the overall program and getting ready to make their splash next.  Sharme, Ash, Isaac, Willa, Margot, Sammy, Gaby, Gilly, Robbie, Melanie, and many who took the summer off.

All in all, the future is still bright for this wonderful group of families, athletes, and coaches.

GO PASEO,

Coach Jim Owens

Champs 1

That was an Amazing, Awesome, Incredible, Epic Year for the Paseo Aquatics Swim Team!

Congratulations to everyone who achieved their best times! Thank you to all the Paseo families, swimmers and coaches for their commitment to our TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More). There were so many great moments and accomplishments from this past season! Champs I Group had 10 swimmers who qualified for WAGS, Spring Age Group Championships, JAGS and Summer Age Group Championships! The best performance of the year was from the Girls 10 and Under 200 Free Relay Team and 200 Medley Relay Team (Serenity Bartlett, Valentina Fedi, Lana Sutinatikul and Hannah Wachtel) that both won 1st Place at Summer Age Group Long Course Championships! The standout swimmers of the year were Hannah Wachtel and Serenity Bartlett. They both represented Paseo at this year's All-Star Festival Meet and they both finished ranked in the Top 10 in Southern California Swimming with times in long course meters.

I am so proud of all the swimmers in Champs I and Bronze, thank you all for making it an unforgettable season! It is an honor to be a Paseo Coach!

- Coach Eric Butler

Bronze

Bronze Group had some new swimmers that were moved up from Juniors and some swimmers that were recently moved up into Silver.

Congratulations to Ethan Lowe, Henri Mikaelian, and Connor Wintermute who all moved up into Silver Group! Boogie Chicketts, Emma Gilbert, and Sadie Gonzales have all improved this year and will be moving up into Silver Group!

Seniors

So far, the summer season has been a time of growth for the senior athletes. The daily training has been demanding and we are looking for some real solid swims coming up at Summer Championships. I like to thing we are having bigger growth in our mindset. The mental side of this sport is greater than the physical aspect.  I ask the kids, why are some athletes at the top of their game?  The answer eludes them. That’s because it is invisible.

Getting uncomfortable and being ok with being uncomfortable. At all practices there comes a moment where the athletes are uncomfortable with the pain they are feeling. We talk about not shying away from the moment rather lean into with a strong mindset and mindset of growth. This is the very reason why some athletes are at the top of their game. They lean into it often and they are very comfortable with getting very uncomfortable and performing repeats over and over again.

I cannot single out and any athlete, I am very proud of all of them and I see the growth. I look forward to the future and faster swimming.

Head Coach Chris Dahowski has taken yet another step in caring for the team. He became certified in Mental Health First Aid For Youths.

Some Keys to Great Swimming:

1) Consistent Training: Attendance, focus and effort

2) Recovery: Rest, stretching and eating/drinking

3) Awareness: Recognizing strengths and weaknesses.  Working at the specifics to get better.

4) Motivation: What inspires the swimmer?  What is he/she swimming for?

5) Seeing "failures" as opportunities:  Looking for what went wrong (long/short term) and finding ways to improve.

6) Know what you go: Knowing best times allows swimmers to have a better understanding of how well training is going.

So what does sleep deprivation do to your game?

•       Decreased energy. Sleep deprivation reduces your body's ability to store glycogen -- energy that you need during endurance events.

•       Worse decision-making and reflexes. Studies have shown that athletes who don't get enough sleep are worse at making split-second decisions and less accurate.

•       Hormone changes. Not getting enough sleep can increase levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that can slow down healing, increase the risk of injuries, and worsen memory. It also lowers levels of growth hormone that helps repair the body.

On game day, what does being overlay emotional before a race do you your game?

•       Having high emotions or falling into being nervous again will increase levels of cortisol in the body. This raised level of cortisol causes a cascade of effects:

§  Reduces body ability to buffer lactate during the race

§  Decrease range of motion in our muscles (stiffness)

§  Causes unclear thoughts before-during the race.

The above two points is something every swimmer faces daily. They are very worthy of conversations. Studies have found clear evidence that increasing sleep has real benefits for athletes.

A 2011 study tracked the Stanford University basketball team for several months. Players added an average of almost two hours of sleep a night. The results? Players increased their speed by 5%. Their free throws were 9% more accurate. They had faster reflexes and felt happier. Other studies have shown similar benefits for football players and other athletes.

A final not on Hydration! (Bring fluids to the pool deck like you bring your goggles)

Here's a breakdown of how much you should be drinking and when:

•     Overall water consumption for kids age 9 to 13 should be 2.0 to 2.5 liters per day

•       14-18 year-olds should strive for 2.5 to 3.5 liters - with girls falling near the lower end of the range, and boys at the higher end.
