Our History
| Established in the summer of 2006, Club Wolverine emerged from a collaboration of Ann Arbor-area swim clubs, swimmers, leadership, and resources. Our mission is simple yet profound: to cater to the diverse needs of area swimmers, guiding them from developmental instruction to age-group, national, and even international competition. Our rich history traces back over three decades when Club Wolverine served as the summer training program for University of Michigan swimmers. Under the visionary leadership of legends like Denny Hill and Jon Urbanchek, our program laid the foundation for numerous Olympic successes. Athletes like Mike Barrowman, Tom Dolan, and Eric Namesnik achieved greatness, crediting Club Wolverine for their journey to the Olympics. In 2004, Coach Bob Bowman took the helm, steering our high-performance athletes through the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, carrying on the tradition of excellence. Coach Bowman, renowned for his coaching of Michael Phelps, continued to nurture world-class swimmers, including Peter Vanderkaay, Eric Vendt, and Allison Schmitt. Tragically, in early 2006, we lost the guiding light of Eric Namesnik, whose vision for the future of swimming in Ann Arbor inspired us all. Despite this loss, our commitment to his vision remained unwavering. Together with Ann Arbor age-group swim clubs, such as Wolverine Aquatics and Ann Arbor Swim Club, we persisted in realizing his dream—a comprehensive program from grassroots development to national prominence. Our journey is marked by a legacy of excellence, with esteemed coaches such as Mike Bottom, Peter Linn, and now Matt Bowe leading the way for the University of Michigan Men's and Women's programs. Their expertise and passion have propelled countless swimmers toward their goals, shaping our elite CW Elite Team. We invite you to join us on this journey, where every stroke is a testament to the spirit of dedication and achievement that defines Club Wolverine Swimming. |
