Good choices include sports bars, dried fruits, pretzels, crackers, breakfast cereals, and canned fruits. By bringing your own food, you ensure that you are eating familiar items. If your hotel room has a refrigerator, purchase low fat...
Keys to Success Olympian and 2010 Pan Pac gold medalist Chloe Sutton’s Keys to Success: 1. Be there! Don’t miss practice. You have to make it a priority. We all have lots of things going on in our lives. We have school, friends, family and hobbies, on top of trying to become a champion swimmer. Juggling it all can be hard at times, but if you make swimming a top priority, then getting there should never be a problem. For me, going to practice is automatically a set-in-stone appointment in...

Carbs, Carbs, Carbs BY KATHLEEN WOOLF, PhD, RD//Special Correspondent Swimmers, like most athletes, use carbohydrates as fuel during exercise. To maximize your body’s carbohydrate stores, consume carbs before, during and after exercise. Carbs Before Exercise Before every practice or competition, include carbs as part of a pre-event meal to “top off” your muscle stores. Select foods that can be quickly digested and absorbed. Depending on the time of your pre-event...
With some big time drops, some new sectional cuts and many finals appearances, the 14 & Unders put a cap on one of the most successful championship seasons in recent memory. Leading the way was Meagan Abad, who not only made finals in the 100 and 200 Back, but dipped under the sectional cut in both events, finishing 6th and 10th places. Skye Downey took 10 seconds off her previous best in the 400 IM, finishing in 10th place. Skye also went under the sectional cut in the 200 Back....

Having Fun Again in the Pool By Mike gustafson//Correspondent "One of my teammates even said I look happier in the pool," Michael Phelps said, standing near the bleachers where tens of smiling, giggling swim fans were watching his every move. Phelps let the moment simmer like a piece of candy, slowly letting it soak, that 5-for-5 conquest of the Indianapolis Grand Prix. We’ve seen success from Michael Phelps. But...

And even though swimmers spend their workouts surrounded by water, they are at an increased risk of dehydration. Workouts conducted during high temperatures and humidity can further increase fluid needs. Both water and sports drinks are important components of training programs. Unlike water, a sports drink can provide fluids, fuel and electrolytes to your working muscles. Is one better than the other for a swimmer to use?...
