Coaches Note 10-13-09

The chill of fall is in the air! Thankfully, we are nice and toasty in the good ol’ Whitworth Aquatic Center. The season is moving right along—make sure you check out all of the events below:

Sylvia’s Order

The Sylvia’s Team Order will close TONIGHT! Please get all of your orders in ASAP for our extra special team discounts. Again, please click here to access our team portal and please click here to check out our equipment recommendations for each group.

Sink or Swim Masters Meet

Our Masters team hosted the 2nd Annual Sink or Swim Meet on Saturday. Almost 50 swimmers from 9 different team participated in the meet, including 11 Spokane Waves swimmers! We had a fantastic time, and swam great—as a team, we finished in 2nd place.
We had 4 swimmers qualify for Masters Nationals: Heidi Friedman, Dustin Ferguson, Danielle Van Der Baan, and Jesse Weston;
These 4 join Harm-Jan Steenhuis who has already qualified for Masters World Championships. Way to go Masters Swimmers!

Pirate Night and Developmental Meet: Nov. 6 and 7

Pirate Night and our Developmental Meet are coming up fast! Pirate Night (Friday, 11/6) is our annual event to support the Whitworth Pirates Varsity Team. It’s a simple evening: there is no practice, but we show up any way to watch the Whitworth Pirates swim against Pacific University; then we eat pizza and hang out with the varsity athletes – simple and fun. It’s a great learning opportunity for all of our swimmers!
The Developmental Meet will be Saturday afternoon (11/7) after Whitworth swims against Linfield College (we are not 100% sure on the start time as of now). You can sign up for events on the website; complete information for both of these events can be found under the Events/Meets section.

Turkey Trot

The entry deadline for Turkey Trot is still a ways off, but we are accepting entries for the meet. It will be held the weekend of Nov. 20 – 22 at the Eastern Washington Recreation Center in Cheney, WA. This is a great opportunity to compete at a fairly large competition close to home. Even our newer swimmers should try and attend at least one day. Please sign up under the Events/Meets section on the website.

Training Tip of the Week

Choices. Many things are outside of our control: water temperature, what time the sun rises and sets, etc. However, there are many things that we can directly control. In swimming, managing our choices is essential to success. The coaching staff is working hard to create an environment in which athletes choose success and achievement more often than not; in other words, swimmers are excited to challenge themselves to be better on a daily basis. We all have the ability to do great things; this is called potential. Our goal is turn that potential into something real and concrete. Here’s a simple question to ask yourself or your swimmers: what did you do to maximize your potential today?

Don’t forget that the Trick or Treat Meet in Moscow, ID is coming up in 10 days! Traditionally, we all wear costumes on Saturday, so if you feel like be a little extra crazy, bring a costume on down to cheer and swim in…ok, don’t swim in it, but still…

Have a great week!
