Coaches Note 12-29-09

We are almost to 2010!  This past year has been another unbelievable year, especially with the incredible accomplishments that all of our swimmers have achieved.  We are pumped up and ready to hit 2010 going full speed ahead!

Remember, the practice schedule for the next week can be found under the Calendar Tab of the website.  Beginning on Monday, January 4, the practice schedule will be back to normal.

January Storm

Entries are due for the January Storm Meet by midnight tonight!  Please go the Events & Meets Tab to enter the meet.  This meet is highly recommended for swimmers who have been practicing over the Christmas break, but all are welcomed to attend.

Parent Education

We have a Parent Education Tab on the website (you must be logged in to view the page!).  There are drop down menus for each workout group, and there are drop downs for volunteering and Board of Directors information.  We are working to make sure that this section can answer as many questions as possible.  In addition, we are hoping that this becomes a resource for all families on the team in order to clarify confusion and help parents more fully understand competitive swimming.  This tab in no way is a replacement for a personal conversation or an email.  It is simply a place for curious parents to learn more about our team and why we do what we do.  There are tons of great posts here, so feel free to take some time to do some research.  If there are any questions that you would like to have answered in this section, please email a coach.

Where in the World is Coach Ariana?

Coach Ariana will be gone for the entire month of January, studying in Taiwan.  She is working towards her B.A. in Education, and will be teaching at a local school.  This school also has a competitive swim team, and Coach Ariana will be observing and working with the team during her time there.

Training Tip of the Week

“Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.”  This is a quote from Albert Einstein, and directly applies to our sport.  Obviously, we go back and forth a lot in our pool, and this at times can seem tedious.  The trick is simple: rather than simply going through the motions at practice, listen attentively and try to accomplish what the coach is asking you to do.  When the coach says “slow with good technique,” do it as perfectly as you can, working hard on the feedback that is given to you.  When the coach says “try and get as close as you can to your best time,” then it is your job to make it happen.  Just going through the motions won’t help you nearly as much as changing things up and focusing on the same things that your coach is focused on.

We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas.  We have one more week of hardcore training before we settle back into our normal routine.  Again, if you are in town, please come to these practices!  They will be incredibly beneficial and will give your bored swimmer something to do and look forward to when they are not in school.

Happy New Year!
