Coaches Note 06-08-10

We had a blast last weekend in Pasco for the Tri-Cities Invitational.  It was a pretty fun and impressive weekend.  How impressive?  Well, you'll just have to read all about it!

There are a few important items in this week's Coaches Note.  I know it's crazy, but you need to start thinking about July (more below), so make sure that you are really paying close attention to the information below.

A Reminder about Being a Swim Parent

We wanted to offer a friendly reminder that while we welcome you to watch practice from the bleachers, please refrain from attempting to be your child's "assistant coach."  This also applies to competitions as well.  It is very confusing to a child when the parents attempt to be both parent and coach.  Often times, kids get conflicting advice or are told to emphasize contrasting elements of swimming (example: coach says "don't breath off turns," parent says "breath more so you can go faster.").  Remember, our coaches are professionally trained to do what they do, and have devoted countless hours of their own practice and study time to learn how to be effective coaches.  The most important thing you can do is to support your child through this process.  If you feel that your child is not being effectively coached, please chat with your child's coach or with Coach Keddy or Coach Kevin, but please refrain from offering technique advice or from taking splits during practice sessions.  Remember, USA Swimming has some awesome articles and advice to parents of swimmers, so click here.  Also, we have some great resources on the Waves website, under our Parent Education tab.  Thanks!

Developmental Meet--June 26, 2010: Whitworth Aquatic Center

We will host another Developmental meet , this time partnering with SAS, on Saturday morning, June 26.  This is a fantastic opportunity for our newer and younger swimmers, especially those who are nervous about competing in a long course pool.  Mark your calendars--sign up is available through the website.  Entries are due in two weeks, Tuesday night, June 22.

Starlight Invitational--July 9-11, 2010: Wenatchee, WA

Entries for the Starlight Invitational are due Tuesday evening, June 22.  Please get your entries in ASAP.

NO PRACTICE FRIDAY

There will be no practice Friday, for any groups, due to the Swim-a-thon award party.

Summer Practice Schedule

The complete summer practice schedule can be found here .   Nothing will change in the afternoons, we will simply add a morning practice at Witter Pool.  These times will go in effect starting Monday, June 21.  Contact Kevin or Keddy for any questions or concerns.

We've had a great start to the long course season, so let's keep the ball rolling!  Have a great week, and we'll see you in the pool.
