Washington Senior Championships (Blog)

Day 1:  Thursday.

We woke up and left Whitworth @ 8AM, picked up our last swimmers in Cheney, and set off for the Washington Senior Championships.  Around 1:30PM we arrived at the hotel and are now unpacking and settling in.  At 2:45 we will head back to the pool to warm-up for the first races of the meet tonight.

(2:20 PM) This meet will host the fastest kids from all over the state in an open competition format. At this meet there are no age-groups; post-grad and jr. high schoolers swim against each other.  Everyone will race in the mornings(prelims), then the top 24 will be selected and get to compete for points at night (Finals.)  This is the first "Open" meet for several of the kids and we are very excited.  In a hour or so we will head over to the pool and 4 swimmers will race the first event, the 1000 Freestyle.  Check us out on the live results link!

(7:02 PM)  4 Swimmers, 4 Races, 6 Best times(Yes… 6), and 5 Team records!  Great start to the weekend.

We just got back from the pool, the 19 swimmers warmed up and 4 raced.  Madi Lydig and Kaylee Beck led off the night.  They jumped out to an early lead in the 1000 and finished several places higher than they were ranked coming into the Event.  Kaylee Beck swam a best time in the 500 (the halfway mark) and finished with a Zones time in the 1000 Free.  Madi Lydig broke the 1000 record for 13-14 Girls on the way to a 10:56 and best time.  Ali Bumann raced and moved up a few places, dropping 9 seconds.   Nate Endebrock dove in on a mission, raced to a new team record in the 500 and a best time by 8 seconds!  After that, he finished hard and dropped 25 seconds on the way to a new team record in the 1000 Free.  Great swimming tonight guys, get ready for tomorrow!

The Races will be uploaded to Flo-Swimming by 7:30 PM.

Day 2: Friday

(1:50PM) We just got back from lunch after the great morning session.  The day started with an awesome girls 200 Free relay.  Our “B” was filled with 4 girls all whom swam best times. They boys “B” relay followed suit, all 4 boys swimming a best time and moving up in the rankings.  Every swim was a season best time, and almost every swim was a personal best time.  The morning was highlighted by 4 team records.  Four swimmers qualified to swim tonight in the finals; Rachel Millet, Carlie McGregor, Madi Lydig, Faith Barr, and Jacob White.  Check back tonight to see how they swim individually & the 4 SWAT “A” relays.

(8:57 PM)  Back from finals.  It was a hard fought night with a few great swims from Carlie McGregor and our Men’s Relays.  The rest of the swims were something we like to call gaining experience in pressure situations.  Ending the evening ranked 17th was a nice surprise, I’m hoping to move up to place in the top 15.  As the trend goes, our team has swam better and better as the meet goes on, so we’re hoping to make a good meet into a great one!

Day 3

(Monday…sorry it’s been a crazy weekend)  We had a great Saturday, many kids making new AGS or Zones times, and several getting second swims who usually don’t.  Our Girls 8 Free Relay got 4th smashing the team record by almost 10 seconds, and the guys continued to roll through, breaking many of the 13-14 guys records, and all of the relay records.  After prelims, Keddy flew over and replaced me as coach while I traveled to my sister’s wedding.  During finals the Waves swimmers rocked, racing hard, dropping time, and ending the night with some spectacular relays.

Day 4

(Monday… after dinner)  The finals day.  As has been a recent pattern, our team had its best day on the last day.  Many, many more best times, team records and amazing performances capped off the meet.  One of the greatest things to watch was Faith Barr winning a swim off to get into Consolation finals, then going into the evening and dominating, moving from 16th to 9th (Winner of the consolation heet.)  Our girls ended the meet just like they started it, setting a new team record.

Recap

They kids were tried and tested, put under pressure, and they succeeded.  I’ve talked at length with the group about preparing physically, mentally, and emotionally.  There were points for EVERY swimmer that they were able to bring all three together and achieve some amazing results.  We achieved 18 individual records, 7 relay records, 75 best times and had a blast while doing it.  Great work Waves swimmers!
