SWAT, State of the Team, All Time Top 10, Meet Results, Highlights, Ind Season Improvement Report

Sean Muncie

Hello SWAT,

We’re at the end of another successful short course season. The path to success is never a straight line and many times it never goes like you planned. Our course this year was rocky but through our collective efforts, SWAT is able to walk away with many areas of significant improvement.

The ability of our team to mobilize and flex with each schedule change throughout this year is one of the reasons SWAT has continued to move forward. Thank you, parents, for adapting quickly to all the new schedule changes, restrictions, last minute cancelations, etc. Knowing we had the support of our team members made managing the schedule this year easier for the coaching staff.

Many of you have heard the coaches say that the swimmers who don’t compete don’t stay in the sport long term. It is difficult to stay motivated when you don’t have anything to look forward to or don’t have anything to keep yourself honest and motivated. Thank you to all our parent volunteers, Board Members, Officials and Timers, who have made our Intrasquad Meets possible. Giving the athletes something to look forward to, to stay focused and train for, helped coaches keep swimmers on task, honest about their own effort and dedication, and working hard. The swimmers don’t always understand the effort and sacrifice all our volunteers do behind the scenes and many times they take it for granted simply because it has always been there for them and don’t see what goes into running a meet. Thank you everyone for donating your time to SWAT this year and providing the opportunities for all our swimmers to compete. The team not only benefitted from your efforts this year (short term) but will continue to reap the rewards in the years to come as our swimmers age up and continue representing SWAT post COVID.

Swimmers, we hope that as you look back on this past year, and understand that the challenges we all faced, will become learning experiences and new strengths moving forward. This year, although difficult, was an opportunity for our swimmers to get ahead. We had the benefit of being in the water while other teams were not. Coaches constantly focused on taking full advantage of every opportunity to swim that we could, given our limited pool space and facility requirements. Each year we talk to the swimmers about Delayed Gratification and why the process and requirements of swimming are so involved. This year was the ultimate test of that Delayed Gratification Concept. If you did not take advantage of what you did have this year and instead focused on what you thought you didn’t have, you may find yourself behind the curve. We hope the next time you are faced with similar challenges in your life you can recognize what needs to be done and avoid making decisions in hindsight. Our team is stronger because of your shared experience and challenges. Remember to take advantage of the opportunity you have now, not the opportunity you think you may have later.

The state of our team is strong!

We are strong financially, we are strong competitively, and we have the infrastructure to continue to grow. SWAT now has more swimmers than we did pre-pandemic; the team has gained access to more/better water, gaining additional pool space, giving SWAT more exposure to a larger community and more security against any unforeseen pool closures or capacity restrictions; and SWAT has recruited more officials and parent volunteers while most of the country has been stagnant because of a lack of opportunities to train new officials.  Like most businesses during this pandemic, we were put in a position to become more efficient or fail. Our support from our membership and an increase in our committed base in all areas of operation has placed SWAT in the position to thrive.

We began training for our championship meets in March 2021 in August 2020. This year was no different than any other. We had lane capacity challenges and didn’t know what meets we would be able to go to, but the process and goal never changed. SWAT has an educated, experienced and committed coaching staff that is focused on the long term success and development of the team. Maintaining high standards and expectations for all athletes has been challenging with our safety and lane capacity limitations. Thank you coaches for holding the line and keeping our swimmers safe, maintaining safety requirements during practices and meets and keeping the athletes on track and focused throughout the season.

We hope everyone enjoys their Spring Break, stay safe and we’ll see you on deck Monday, April 19.
