Wissahickon Community Aquatic Club

Mike Koziol - is thrilled to take on the new role as the Director of Water Polo for WCAC Maverick.  Mike is no stranger to the Wissahickon​ community, he is a 2009 graduate of the school.  He played water polo all four years at Wissahickon, and his teams made the state tournament every year, capped off with a fourth place finish his senior year.  After graduating from Wissahickon, Mike attended DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois, where he coached swimming and water polo at a local YMCA all throughout college.  Mike moved back to the Philadelphia area after college and was named the Head Boys’ Water Polo Coach at Germantown Academy in the Fall of 2013.  His responsibilities at GA have greatly expanded in his time there, as he now serves as both the Head Boys and Girls Water Polo Coach there and teaches History.  A consummate believer in the power of lifelong learning, Mike graduated from Villanova’s Graduate School of Education in the summer of 2023 with a Master’s Degree in Education plus Pennsylvania Teaching Certification.

Outside of his work at GA Mike has been active in the club water polo scene since his return to the area.  He worked with several clubs in the area before finding a perfect fit with Maverick in 2015.  He has continued to work with the club through its merger with WCAC and is so excited to have the opportunity to continue to expand the sport in our area.

 

 

Matthew Del Rio - has been coaching with WCAC Maverick for three seasons. A graduate from Springfield Township High School and former Pennsylvania Water Polo All-State recipient, he played collegiately for Washington and Jefferson College before earning a BA and MA in English from Temple University. He has coached at the national level with WCAC Maverick, traveling to Texas in 2021 and California each of the past two summers to participate in USAWP’s Junior Olympics. In Dallas, the 18u Boys team finished first overall in their division.

In addition to his experience with WCAC Maverick, he has spent ten seasons as a water polo coach at La Salle College High School, five of which he has served as the water polo program’s head coach. He has also helped coach the school’s swim team since 2019. Before practices and games, Matthew spends his time in the classroom, where he teaches English, Technology, and Aquatics at La Salle.

 

 

 

Kris Hays - grew up in Florida, where she attended Miami Killian Senior High.  At Killian she was a three year varsity water polo player and  swimmer.  After graduating from Killian she attended William Jewell College, in Liberty, Missouri where she swam all four years.  Kris brings a lifelong love of being in the water to the program, and she has been involved in swimming and water polo in a myriad of capacities.  She has served as a PIAA swimming and diving referee since 2012, was a longtime league rep for her summer swim club, and has served as a water polo official since 2021.  Coach Kris has been coaching with WCAC Maverick since 2021 and brings a tremendous amount of passion for helping athletes of all skill levels learn and have fun.  She loves the energy of being on deck and teaching her favorite sport! 

 

 

 

 

Sarah Lloyd - After a successful distance swimming career at Kenyon College, Sarah picked up water polo with her first teaching job at the Gilman School in Baltimore, MD. In her four seasons as assistant coach, she helped the Greyhounds to back-to-back championships in the MIAA Conference and three top-four finishes at the Easterns tournament. Sarah has been coaching with WCAC Maverick since 2022.  She currently serves as assistant coach at Germantown Academy, where she also teaches in the Upper School History Department. 

 

 

 

 

 

 
 
Chadd Crump has been playing,  coaching, and officiating water polo in the Philadelphia area since 1986.
He played his high  school water  polo at Germantown Academy and college water polo at Johns Hopkins University and has been inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at both institutions.  In recent years,  Chadd has been an assistant coach at both Villanova University and Wissahickon High School. He was  fortunate enough to join Maverick Water Polo in 2018.

 

 

 

 

Dan Fleck - Started his water polo career at La Salle College High School where he played from 2009- 2013 (Captain, All-State Team). During high school, Dan played club for Greater Philly and Princeton Tigers Aquatic Club, where he had the opportunity to travel and play in international and Junior Olympic tournaments. Dan went on to play DI at Iona University (formally Iona College) from 2013-2017, where he served as captain for his Jr. and Sr. years. After graduating, Dan stayed involved in the water polo community, starting his coaching career at UDAC from 2017-2021. In 2021 he became the head coach of Souderton Area High School Girls team. In 2022 he started coaching for the North East Zone, Olympic Development Program as the head coach of the girls development team. He is currently the head coach of the girls youth team and assistant coach of the boys development team. Dan continues to play masters water polo at Greater Philly and for the Beef Boys with former high school and college teammate Ian Thompson. 

 

 

 

 

Greg Beyer - Is a proud Wissahickon and WCAC alumnus and is excited to return to his home club.  Greg competed in water polo and​ swimming during his time at Wissahickon.  Known for his thoughtful leadership and relentless motor, Greg was recognized by his peers as a team captain his senior year and was named to the All-State Water Polo team for his standout play.  After graduating from Wissahickon Greg went on to swim for the Bloomsburg University Huskies, where he was also a member of the club water polo team.  Upon returning to the Area Greg began coaching at Cedarbrook Country Club and with the WCAC swim program in 2015 before returning to his alma mater to coach girls water polo and swimming.

He was named the Head Coach of the Girls' Water Polo team in 2017 and orchestrated a rejuvenation of the program.  In his second season at the helm the program earned their first State Championship Tournament appearance since 2011 and his teams are one of two programs in the state that have finished in the top five at the State Tournament every year since 2019.  He has guided numerous athletes to All-State and All-American recognition for their exceptional play.  In addition to coaching, Greg has a passion for Real Estate and became a realtor in 2022. In his free time, Coach Greg can be found playing Pickleball or Golf, spending time with his wife and two dogs or hanging out with friends.

 

 

Ian Thompson - grew up playing water polo in Montgomery County, playing wherever pool time was available. In high school, Ian played for La Salle College High School (Captain & 1st team all-state), Princeton Club (USA) Club Team, and Greater Philadelphia Club Team, and participated in ODP (Olympic Development Program 18 & Unders). Ian attended College at Iona University (formerly Iona College) from 2011-2015. Ian was a starter all four years of his college career and was a 2X Captain and 1X All American and was tied for 5th All-Time in ejections drawn for Iona’s program. During College Ian played for NYAC and attended tournaments with the team. After Ian graduated college he continued to be involved with the sport whether it was coaching, reffing, working for the Collegiate Water Polo Association, working for USA Water Polo, or playing with his Masters Travel team, the Beef Boys. Ian is excited to give back to the water polo community and make an impact like other coaches did for him when growing up!

Andre Nyce - learned to play water polo as a freshman at Germantown Academy in 1995.  He was fortunate enough to learn from some great coaches including Dan Sharadin and Ricardo Azevedo and proceeded to play collegiately at University of Massachusetts.  In 2011, Andre got back into water polo as an official.  Throughout the years he has whistled games from age-group, to high school, collegiate and masters' club water polo.  From 2016-2021, Andre served as the assistant coach at LaSalle University and helped start a new team and developed student-athletes to earn a 2nd-place finish at Easterns Championship in 2021.  After 5 years of steady improvement, LaSalle dropped the men's water polo team.  He started coaching with WCAC in 2021 and recently became head coach of William Penn Charter in the fall of 2023.  Andre's goal is to start coaching Pennsylvania athletes at a young age so that they may reach their full potential and compete in college and even professionally.  

Darren Hardel - started playing water polo when he was 11 for Young Athletes of America in 1987.  He played club through high school, participating in Junior Olympics all 4 years of high school, and was selected to the National Youth Team for two years.  He played for Dan Sharadin through club high school and through college at Villanova University.  In recent years, Darren is assistant Coach with Upper Merion High School and has been assisting with the WCAC-Maverick Program for the last several years.

Chris Ianni - started playing water polo for North Penn High School in 2003 and eventually led his team to a State Championship as a co-captain his senior year. In 2017, Chris was recognized for his leadership, tenacity, and accomplishments when being inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at NP.  He began coaching in 2013, as he led the Upper Dublin water program in their inaugural year.  His teams took off quickly, as his girls’ team made the state tournament within three years of their founding.  They have remained a competitive force since then, and he guided the teams to their best season in program history in 2023 - as the boys team finished 3rd in the state and the girls team finished in 6th place.  During his time coaching water polo, Chris has mentored and instructed many athletes who have been named to all of the All-State teams, and many more athletes who have continued playing the sport beyond high school at all levels from club through D1. 

    Chris has also served as a swim coach at Upper Dublin High School and Sunny Willow Swim Club.  There, Chris also leads several water polo clinics for all age-groups. In 2019, Chris was recognized nationally through the Positive Coaching Alliance as a Double Goal Coach Award Winner embodying the positive impact on youth while pursuing winning, and the even more important goal of teaching life lessons through sports – developing Better Athletes and Better People.  Beyond the pool deck, Chris teaches Latin and Mathematics at UDHS. He is very excited to be part of such a great program here at WCAC and is looking forward to continuing the development of the sport and working with such an outstanding community.
