Become a Swim Official with Minnesota Swimming

Are you interested in supporting competitive swimming in Minnesota? Becoming a swim official is a rewarding way to contribute to the sport while gaining valuable experience. Here’s what you need to know about joining our team of officials. You do not have to have any prior knowledge or experience with swimming to become an official.

Why Become an Official?

Swim officials play a crucial role in ensuring fair and safe competition. As an official, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Enhance your understanding of the sport
  • Be part of a dedicated community
  • Help athletes perform at their best
  • Get front-row seats at all the events

Getting Started

  1. Learn the Basics: Familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations of competitive swimming. Minnesota Swimming provides resources and training materials to help you get started.

  2. Attend a Training Session: Participate in training sessions offered throughout the year. These sessions will cover essential officiating techniques and rules interpretation.

  3. Get Certified: After completing your training, you can take the certification exam to become a recognized official. Certification levels include Stroke and Turn Judge, Starter, and Referee, among others.

  4. Stay Informed: Officials are required to stay up-to-date with any changes to the rules and guidelines. Regular workshops and meetings are held to keep everyone informed.
