In Loving Memory of Samantha “Sammy” Rose Kriese

March 21, 2003 – June 17, 2021
Leader | Mentor | Friend

Samantha "Sammy" Rose Kriese was a beacon of light in the lives she touched. An honor student and exceptional athlete at Red Wing High School, she graduated with the highest distinction on June 4, 2021, with dreams of starting her freshman year at the University of Minnesota in the fall. Tragically, her life was cut short in a motor vehicle accident, leaving a profound void in our hearts.

Sammy’s impact was felt in many areas. A dedicated member of the Red Wing Girls Swim & Dive Team for six years, she also excelled as a Nordic skier, served as co-president of the Sustainability Club, and was an active member of the National Honor Society and Student Council. As the manager of the Boy’s Swim & Dive Team and a participant in Ultimate Frisbee, her vibrant spirit resonated across various teams and activities.

From a young age, Sammy immersed herself in swimming, inspired by her older siblings. She began her competitive journey at just six years old with the Red Wing Swim Club, quickly earning recognition as an outstanding breaststroker and a beloved presence at the pool. As she transitioned to the Red Wing High School Team, she became not only a fierce competitor but also a cherished friend and role model to many. Sammy’s infectious laughter and warm spirit filled the pool office, and her leadership shone brightly as she served as a Senior Co-Captain, achieving remarkable successes including Big Nine Conference and Section 1A Champion titles and multiple appearances at the Minnesota High School State Championships.

Sammy embodied the qualities of a true leader, teammate, and friend. Her genuine heart, unwavering spirit, and selflessness made her a beloved figure in the lives of those around her.

She valued the journey over the results, treasuring the memories created along the way. Her resilience and determination were evident in her mantra, “No pain, no gain,” and her encouraging words, “Last one fast one.” Sammy’s passion for inclusivity ensured that everyone felt welcomed and valued, and her exuberant support for her teammates was unmatched. She was often the loudest cheerleader on deck, quick to check in on anyone who needed a boost after a tough race.

Sammy’s radiant smile and joyful presence lit up even the most challenging practices. She had an undeniable ability to uplift younger swimmers, fostering an environment of warmth and support. The world is undeniably less bright without her, yet we carry her spirit in our hearts. We honor her by cherishing life’s small moments and striving to be a positive force in our communities. We hold close to the memories she gifted us and mourn the moments we will never share.

To honor Sammy’s legacy, the Red Wing Swim Club presents the annual Samantha Rose Kriese Award to the swimmer who best

exemplifies her qualities of leadership, mentorship, and friendship.
