GCY Mako Volunteer is Recognized by Guilford County Schools!

Our own "Auntie" was recognized in December as the Guilford County School system volunteer of the month, for her work at Jones.  She's been recognized in the past for her service to the Y, but this is another wonderful honor.  She's a great role  model for the swim team, and has done countless things in the past to make our team and our team events run smoothly - I cannot thank her enough!

Here's the press release:

It takes a team to make a school successful, and at Jones Elementary, that team includes two outstanding individuals who were recognized today as the January Employee and Volunteer of the Month.

Employee of the Month Mildred Lawson helps build pride in her school, and she has taken the initiative to make sure others do the same. As the lead custodian, she has instilled a sense of teamwork and commitment that has paid off in both the respect of students and staff and in a significant gain from last year’s health inspection rating. She even takes her custodial staff out to lunch occasionally to encourage a sense of camaraderie.

Lawson, who has been a GCS custodian for six years, says she likes being around the children and hopes that she can be a positive influence on their lives, the way a custodian at Wiley Elementary was with her son.

Volunteer of the Month Oneta “Auntie” Manuel also makes a difference that is felt school-wide. For more than 10 years, Manuel has been assisting Jones in the classroom, in the media center or on the PTA. She serves as a mentor to students and is considered part of the Jones family.

Jones PTA president Shirrell Williams says, “Auntie has a heart of gold, and we love her and wanted to share all the wonderful things she does for our school daily by mentoring students and helping out in both the traditional and Spanish immersion classrooms.”

Lawson was surprised with a $50 gift card from Sam’s Club, and Manuel received $50 courtesy of Rice Collision Center. During the month of January, their photos will hang at the district’s central offices, at Jones Elementary and at the businesses that have given their generous support to these programs. Both Lawson and Manuel will be recognized at the Jan. 10, 2012, Board of Education meeting.
Congrats Auntie!  Recently, Kennedy Reid (9-10 Swimmer at Bryan YMCA) accepted the award on her Aunt's behalf - thanks Auntie for a job well done for our schools and all that you do for the GCY Swim Team!
