REVISED EXPLANATION of rule concerning CLOSED YMCA Meets

We need to point this out to our new swimmers and parents - last year as a first year GCY Mako Parent, this also surprised me, and I did not completely understand until mid-January, this gets a little complicated:

We have 2 closed YMCA meets left on the schedule:

  1. Nov 30 - Dec 2 - CHY Holiday Invite in Hillsborough, NC
  2. February 2 - 3 - GCY Winter Invitational in Greensboro, NC (at Bryan YMCA)

GCY's Upper Southeast Regional YMCA Champs (USRY Champs) is March 15-17, 2013

We consider this our primary team championship meet, even though we will have several swimmers also peaking for JO's, Senior Champs, Age Group Sectionals, or YMCA Nationals.

Referencing the following rule concerning the recent USRY Qualifiers we just sent out...even though there are 67 swimmers who made the time standard, there are only 40 eligible to swim at this time who meet this current criteria:

"In order to compete in the USRY Championships, each participant must have competed in at least three (3) interassociation (closed YMCA) meets since September 1st, 2012..."

In the case of a 2 or 3 day meet, up to 2 sessions in one meet can be counted....so those who swam in 2 days of the TYDE Meet in December and the Hillsborough Dual Meet with CHY and YBAC, are eligible!

Our GCY Fall Festival is an OPEN USA Swimming Meet, not CLOSED YMCA, so it does not count towards this requirement.

Possible scenarios to consider if you are not yet eligible:

  1. If you only swam in the TYDE Meet, or the CHY/YBAC dual meet, we highly recommend in swim in the Chapel Hill Holiday Invite November 30 - December 2nd (at least one session, 2 preferably), this way, no worries if a flu bug or something hits in February (or use GYSSA, see #5).
  2. If you missed both the TYDE Meet and the CHY/YBAC dual meet, we need you to swim in both the Chapel Hill Holiday Invite AND the GCY Winter Meet February 2-3...if you miss either/or, it may be difficult to get you eligible for USRY Champs.(or use GYSSA, see #5).
  3. Finally, if you swim in High School, there are HS Regionals on the Saturday of our home meet, February 2nd. You may only be able to swim Sunday only if this affects you, so if you have not yet swum, you definitely need at least 2 days of the CHY Holiday Invite. (or use GYSSA, see #5).
  4. YMCA National qualifiers must do USRY Champs in order to swim at YMCA Nationals.
  5. GYSSA - also counts as a closed YMCA meet, but you need at least one meet in order to participate to become eligible for USRY Champs.

We need all swimmers to plan on swimming in our next home meet, February 2nd-3rd, the GCY Winter Invitational at Bryan YMCA!

Thanks everyone!
