GCY races FAST at Indy!
As many of you watched live from home, GCY raced with the best this past week in Indianapolis! Led by now 2-time YMCA All-American Heather Sigmon, 4 out of the 12 swimmers earned second swims at one of the fastest meets in the country!
Heather placed 13th OVERALL in the 50-meter backstroke, crushing her own team record and exciting the crowd with one of the fastest backstroke starts in the country in "B" finals! Jake Ennis WON "C" finals in the 50 breast, dominating the field and beating times all the way through "A" finals, setting a new GCY team record in the process. Alex Kreager won over the crowd in her 400 IM - after the first 200 meters she was 10 seconds back from the leader and 7th in the heat of 8, then poored it on as the announcer got the fans involved and finished all the way to second place in "C" finals! Alex Strasser had a very SPECIAL 50-meter butterfly swim off, which he WON and smashed the GCY team record in the process!
All twelve GCY swimmers swam fast, relays and individuals! Here are a few of the highlights for each!
- GCY took four 13-14 girls, which is pretty remarkable in a national championship meet designed for 15&overs! Virginia Gilliland broke a team record in the 50-meter breaststroke, an old Coach Leigh record! McKenzie Campbell, one of the youngest competitors in the field, won the hardest worker award as she swam more events than any other AND had an explosive 30.74 in the GCY 200-medley relay. Alaina Joyce had top 100 finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, AND had a NEW best time in the 50 meter freestyle! Annie Carr, new team record holder in the 50 and 100 meter freestyles, earned spots on 3 separate GCY relays and swam best time splits in the process!
- GCY's 5 national boys, led by Jake Ennis and Ales Strasser's earlier mentioned performances, also excelled at Y-Nats! Gil Cruz rocked best times in the 50 and 200 meter backstrokes, 100 meter freestyle, and swam in all four relays, one of which made the short course national time standard and a new GCY team record! Brannin Webber earned his first individual YMCA national time standard in the 100 meter freestyle, and rocked a best time and near miss in the 200 meter freestyle. Jon Pulaski broke a team record in the 400 meter freestyle, swam a best time in the 100 meter freestle by 2 seconds, and anchored the GCY record setting relay.
- GCY's national girls, Heather, Alex, and Audrey Curtis, also swam fast. Heather broke a team record in the 200 meter backstroke just missed finals in the 100 meter backstroke. She also earned spots on 3 of the GCY relays, and earned the All-American status for her 50 back! Alex Kreager swam best time splits in all 4 of GCY's relays, and showed her versatily by placing top 80 in EVERYTHING! Audrey Curtis became a backstroker, as she posted the 3rd fastest 100-meter backstroke time on the team this season, and swam on 2 GCY relays, splitting best times in both!
