GCY Competitive Practices Start Tomorrow, Monday, August 25th!

The 2014-2015 GCY Competitive Swim Season starts tomorrow, Monday, August 25th!  

Here are some quick answers to some commonly asked questions:

  1. When do the Seasonal groups start?
    • Although the competitive groups start tomorrow, August 25th, the Seasonal groups all start Tuesday, September 2nd. 
    • EXCEPTION: Reidsville site starts Tuesday, Sept. 2nd for all levels!
  2. Is the meet schedule out yet?
    • Yes!  There are still a few meets (mainly in March) whose location and dates are not yet determined (Senior sectionals, USRY, GYSSA, etc...) but here is the official meet schedule with those tentative meets mentioned:

  3. Do morning practices also start tomorrow too (Monday, August 25th)?
    • Yes!  Because so many of our swimmers have traditionally used mornings as his/her main practice time, we offer mornings starting tomorrow. We encourage all of the swimmers that do doubles to hold off on doing that until the week of September 15th, in order to get a great start off to the school year!
    • Monday and Wednesdays are at the GAC, 5:30am-7am
    • Tuesday, Thursday, Friday are at Bryan 5:30am-7am
  4. What's Flexible Friday?
    • We have the GAC every Friday where there is not a meet that prevents us from practicing. On Fridays, any swimmer from AG1, AG2, Senior Prep, and Senior can practice on Friday at the GAC from 6pm-8pm.  Dryland is 6-6:30pm, and swimming is 6:30pm through normal practice end time (AG1 releases at 7:30, AG2 at 7:45, and Senior Prep and Senior releases at 8pm).  Swimmers may stay also at his/her host site.
  5. GCY starts so early and we just finished with Open House, is attendance required this week?  
    • No, we want our student-athlete swimmers to get off to a great start on the school year too.  We traditionally waive attendance requirements the first week so that there is time to adjust to the schedule!
  6. I haven't registered yet, can I still come out and practice?
    • Yes!  As long as there is space available, we encourage all of those who haven't yet registered to practice if they can and register this week. 
  7. I get paid at the end of the month, and school supplies set us back, can you hold my registration fee check until August 31st?
    • Yes! 
  8. I still owe meet fees from 2013-2014, that's why I haven't registered, can we still sign-up?
    • Yes, please contact Cynthia Shannon to set-up payment arrangements for the remaining meet fees and sign-up today! 
  9. What classes are full or nearing capacity?
    • 4:30-6:00pm AG2 at Bryan - Almost full
    • 4:30-6:15pm Senior Prep at Bryan - Full, but we anticipate a few moves this week, we encourage signing up on the waiting list if you have not registered.
    • MSL 1 at Spears (Seasonal) - Full with a waiting list - AG1, AG2, and Senior Prep still have room!
    • MSL 2 at Spears (Seasonal) - Full with a waiting list - AG1, AG2, and Senior Prep still have room!
  10. Do the strength training classes start this week?
    • ​Yes!  They are available to ALL high school students, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Bryan YMCA from 6am-7am.  Do not try to swim from 5:30-6am, then lift, they have been separated for the benefit of greater focus on the dryland side. They were specifically developed towards our National level group but available to all hs aged swimmers.  Please arrive 5-10 minutes prior ready to work hard!
  11. Do we have practice on Labor Day (Monday, September 1st) and/or this coming Saturday (Agust 30th)?
    • ​No for Labor Day, all groups and all levels are OFF on Labor Day.
    • Yes for Saturday, we do have practice this Saturday, August 30th and going forward!
