GCY's Heather Sigmon qualifies for USA Swimming's National Championships!

NEW GCY HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE!

At our national team's swim meet with STAR Aquatics last night, GCY's Heather Sigmon qualified for USA Swimmings National Championships in Greensboro, NC, Dec 3rd-6th!

This is the highest level achievement besides USA Olympic Trials, and Heather is the first and only swimmer in our 45 year history to get to this level!  This is the national championship meet for USA swimming, not junior champs, she skipped that step!  Its where Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps, Missy Franklin, and the rest usually come out to compete...she is also the only swimmer 18-under from Greensboro that we know of who is eligible now to attend. She not only qualified but did so by nearly a full second in a sizzling 55.58 seconds! Currently the time ranks as the 8th best in the country for her age (all swim teams, for YMCAs teams she is #1).

Heather is a sophomore at Northwest Guilford and has been in our program now for 3 years, since age 13...

We also had a near miss (and comeback swimmer of the year candidate emerging) in Laurel Kiselis, who just missed the 50 free and 100 free time standards, but set GCY team records and personal bests in both.  Laurel has been in our program for 7-plus years and has overcome a serious concussion that occurred almost 2 years ago (kept her out for one full year).  Laurel's mom and family have been battling cancer as well…I cannot tell you how proud the coaches, swimmers, and team felt when she swam that fast again last night!

This was a great meet for all swimmers who competed - 35 swimmers competed and we probably had one of the highest percentage best time swims meets in recent memory. GREAT JOB MAKOS and GREAT JOB supporting each other through the evening!

Heather will swim Friday, December 5th in the 100-yard backstroke, for a national championship! She’ll then compete again on Sunday for a spot at Olympic Trials in 2016.  We are very proud of this achievement and will be working hard with her to take the next step!  If you get a chance, please click this link for the newest meet on our schedule, the 2014 Winter National Championships to find out all details about the event, we'd love to see some Makos in the crowd!
