GCY Coach - Katie McNerney - Nominated for NC Age Group Coach of the Year!
Congratulations to Katie McNerney for an incredible coaching year! Katie has been nominated as North Carolina Age Group coach of the year. Just being nominated is an incredible honor. We are all so thankful that Katie is a part of the GCY staff. She is so deserving of this honor and many more.

KATHY MCKEE AGE GROUP COTY (Coach of the Year) NOMINEES
ZACH MURRAY: NEW WAVE SWIMMING (KATHY MCKEE AGE GROUP COTY CANDIDATE)
Zach Murray began coaching at New Wave Swimming in 2008 and returned in 2016 after coaching stints in Nashville and Atlanta. In 2022, his swimmers’ high rankings earned Murray an automatic nomination for both age group and senior coach of the year honors. Zach had swimmers in both groups who achieved All Star Status and Summer Junior cuts. His swimmers had several NAG Top Ten Rankings with a high of #1 in 13-14 age group and a high of #2 in senior rankings. One of his swimmers also won the National Junior 5K Open Water championship.
SHERWOOD WATTS: NORTH CAROLINA AQUATIC CLUB (KATHY MCKEE AGE GROUP COTY CANDIDATE)
Sherwood Watts joined North Carolina Aquatic Club in 2018 after a long career with the Sarasota Sharks in Florida. With 40 years of experience, Sherwood has coached at all levels. In 2023 Watts-coached athletes achieved several NCS Top Five ranking, with 9 of his swimmers named as NCS All Stars. Sherwood had two swimmers earn NAG Top Ten rankings. This past year, NCAC achieved third place finishes at both the 2023 NCS SC and LC Age Group championship meets.
KATIE MCNERNEY: GREENSBORO COMMUNITY YMCA (KATHY MCKEE AGE GROUP COTY CANDIDATE)
Katie McNerney coaches with GCY - 1st place mid-size team at age group champs; 18 age group champions; 3 state records broken by 11-12 female Reina Liu in 50 back, 100 back, and 200 back. ASCA ranked GCY as 21st ranked for their 12 and Under program in the country. In 2023, McNerney - coached athletes achieving several NCS Top Five ranking, with 3 of her swimmers named as NCS All Stars. McNerney had one swimmer achieve four #1 rankings in National Top 10 for 11-12 age group.

Russ Kasl has been a part of SwimMAC for 20+ years, and a NCS supporter for decades. Russ’s Accomplishments during 22-23 Year: Virtual Club Champions #1 Ranked Team both Short Course and Long Course NCS Age Group Champs - Short Course & Long Course Champions ESSZ Age Group Sectional Short Course Champions; 13-14 Girls State Record 200m Free Relay; 13-14 Boys State Record 800y Free Relay; 13-14 Boys State Record 200m Medley Relay; 13-14 Boys State Record 400m Free Relay; 13-14 Boys State Record 200m Fly - David Sammons; Summer Junior National Qualifiers - 3 Swimmers Winter Junior National Qualifiers - 5 Swimmers Futures Qualifiers - 17 Swimmers. Russ coached 9 swimmers with Top 10 National Rankings, of which the Highest Nationally Ranked Swimmer is David Sammons ranked 3rd for 13-14 Male 200m Fly.
