Meet Our Coaches
Coach Jim Triplett began his swimming journey as a child with the Santa Clara Swim Club, where he trained under the legendary George Haines. Growing up in a world-class environment surrounded by Olympians instilled in him a lifelong standard of excellence. He continued his swimming and academic career at San Jose State University.
Jim’s coaching career in Santa Cruz began in 1974 as Program Director and Head Coach of the Cabrillo Threshers. In 2016, he transitioned the team to a coach-led model, rebranding it as ACSC. Over the decades, he has coached athletes at every level—from Junior Olympics and Far Westerns to Sectionals, Junior Nationals, U.S. Nationals, Olympic Trials, and even international competitions representing Team USA. He has developed numerous nationally ranked swimmers and has served as a head coach at USA Swimming Camps at the Olympic Training Center.
In addition to his work with ACSC, Jim has led the Aptos High School swim program since 1980, making him the winningest coach in Santa Cruz County Athletic League history. He has developed many CCS champions and guided the girls' team to multiple top-three CCS finishes in the 1990s. In 2016, he coached Chris Staka to a CIF State title in the 100 backstroke—Santa Cruz County’s first-ever state champion and the fastest high school backstroker in the nation that year.
Jim also serves as an assistant coach at Cabrillo College, where he helped guide Tommy Zaferes to three state titles and a national record in the 200 butterfly in 2006—a record that stood for 17 years.
His many honors include Pacific Swimming’s George Haines Senior Coach of the Year, CCS Honor Coach, California Girls State High School Coach of the Year, and induction into the Aptos High Coaching Hall of Fame.
Off the pool deck, Jim enjoys playing the piano and cheering on the Golden State Warriors.
Tanner Henning grew up in Santa Cruz County and began his swimming journey with the Cabrillo Threshers in 1992, remaining with the team throughout his entire age group career. As a Threshers and Aptos High School swimmer, Tanner competed at the sectional level. After high school, he continued his swimming career at Cabrillo College, earning All-American honors in the 1650 freestyle and 200 backstroke. He went on to swim for the Division I program at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he completed his degree in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration.
Since beginning his coaching career in 2008, Tanner has developed numerous Junior Olympic and Far Western champions, and coached swimmers who have achieved national age group rankings. In addition to his work with ACSC, Tanner has also coached the Aptos High School swim team alongside ACSC head coach Jim Triplett since 2009.

Renata Nobile-Orozco began her swimming journey with SLUG Aquatics, where she spent her formative years developing her skills and love for the sport. Before high school, she joined ACSC and continued swimming throughout her adolescence, gaining firsthand experience of the opportunities competitive swimming offers. She traveled to higher-level meets with Coach Jim and other senior swimmers, qualifying for advanced competitions along the way.
Renata’s coaching career began in high school as a swim lesson instructor with Adventure Sports. After a few years, she transitioned to coaching with ACSC, where she continues to share her passion for the sport. She is a fully certified USA Swimming coach and also holds lifeguard certification.
Renata graduated from Santa Cruz High School in 2024 and is currently studying Applied Mathematics at UC Santa Cruz.
