Water Polo Playing Groups

BAC structures its groups first and foremost with the goal of having athletes train in the environment that best matches their skill level. In combination with age groupings, we have set the groups on this page with that focus in mind. The main criteria used in the process of placing a player in the correct group are:

  • Water polo experience level and commitment to both practices and games
  • Swimming ability: good demonstration of swimming skills, eggbeater, and endurance
  • Water polo proficiency

During some seasons when the teams compete in high level tournaments we may need to adjust our training groups to fit the age requirements of those tournaments, so there may be times when an athlete is not always competing with the full group they practice with.

Note that for age based tournaments, USA Water Polo guidelines state that placement of an athlete is determined based on their age on August 1st in the year of competition. For example: an athlete that is 16 or younger on August 1, 2016 will be on the 16U team.

Group placement is decided by coaches. Players are placed in the group where they have the best opportunities to improve and develop their individual and team skills. This is a dynamic process, and over the season, players may be asked to move between groups as their skills and commitment levels evolve.

** USA Water Polo guidelines NOW state that the age of an athlete will be determined based on their age on August 1st the year of competition. For example, an athlete that is 16 or younger until August 1, 2016 will be on the 16U team.
