Swim Meets are a fun way to gauge your progress throughout the summer. You will receive a ribbon for each race you participate in. During the first week of practice we will educate parents on how swim meets are run, but please keep in mind the following things:
Declaring Participation in a Meet: YOU are responsible to sign up your child(ren) for swim meets prior to the Monday meets. Declaring events during a regular season (not the mock meet) generally opens on Tuesday and closes on Thursday by midnight. Please note the deadline is listed on each event for clarification. Each swimmer may sign up for 1-3 individual events. Coaches may assign a relay as well. Keep in mind that this is a wish list. Your coaches may assign swimmers to swim an event that your child did not sign up for to encourage swimmers to try new strokes, and/or decline that your child swims an event due to safety or skill level.
Volunteering: We can't run the meet without your help! We ask that you volunteer for 3 half meets or more. Sign ups are posted prior to the Monday meet, opening Tuesday and closing Sunday night. Parent volunteers also check in with Katie Rudolph, our volunteer coordinator, at the beginning of the meet and switch AFTER the backstroke events are over.
Heat Sheets: (event numbers) will be posted on SportsYou by Sunday night or Monday morning. Please check and make note of the events your child will swim. We have found that writing your child's events on their arm with a Sharpie pen at home works best, but coaches and volunteers are ready to mark up the kids when they get to the meet.
Meet Arrival and During the Meet: When arriving at the meet on Monday, your child must check in with the age group LEAD, and the event numbers will be written on their arm, if you have not already done this. Swimmers will set up under their age group tent, and stay with their age group during the meet. Remember to bring snacks, water, a chair, towels, swim cap, goggles, and any games/activities for between events. We appreciate everyone tidying up after daily practices and meets so we can all leave as quickly as possible.
Relays: Some swimmers will be assigned to swim relays! Relays will not be changed for any reason. Please do NOT leave the meet early without telling the coaches because once a relay is set, your relay teammates are counting on you!
Disqualifications (DQ’s): are an unpleasant necessity of swim meets. All swimmers are required to swim a legal stroke. Disqualification should not be viewed as a failure, but as a learning tool. Remember that the judges are volunteers; please be kind.
Ribbons: Swimmers will receive their event ribbons during the remainder of that same week. Emphasis will be placed on individual improvement.
