Overview

WELCOME TO THE 2024 SEASON

The Bay Club Rolling Hills Stingrays Swim Team is one of ten teams in the Marin Swim League (MSL). The Stingrays Swim Team embraces the MSL Mission Statement:

The Marin Swim League (MSL) is a summer league dedicated to providing and preserving quality amateur competitive swimming events for its subscribing membership. The MSL fosters and promotes the ideals of good sportsmanship, fair play and good fellowship for participants of all ages and abilities in an environment that nurtures self-esteem in all the children it serves.

THE STINGRAYS SWIM TEAM

  • Encourages and welcomes youth ages 5-18 years to improve all-around swimming ability, including technique, strength, stamina and safety.

  • Allows swimmers to experience a healthy, competitive environment with other teams in Marin.

  • Provides an opportunity to have fun, make new friends, improve overall fitness, and for families to be involved in their child’s/children’s sport.

The Stingrays Swim Team is a “family style” program. The Club Aquatics Director and the Stingrays Parent Advisory Board fulfill the leadership roles. The parents work together as a team, with the leadership, to complete the total function of the program. Board meetings are held monthly in the Adult Lounge at the club or virtually.   All Stingrays parents are welcome to attend the Board meetings (please ask any Board member for details). We are also always interested in hearing from any new potential Board members. If you are interested one of these season long positions please contact Yvette Smith or one of the Board members.

JUNIOR STINGRAYS

Our Junior Stingrays program prepares our youngest swimmers for the challenges of the Stingrays Swim Team. The focus of Junior Stingrays is on stroke technique development in a fun-learning environment in preparation for moving on to Stingrays, the next level of Swim Team.

Junior Stingrays swimmers generally swim freestyle and backstroke at home swim meets. However, as Junior Stingrays develop additional skills and with the coach’s consent, they may sign up to swim additional strokes in the "8 and Under" heats and they may swim at away meets.  Junior Stingrays with additional skills development and at the discretion of the coaches may also be moved up into the Stingrays "8 and Under" practice group.

To participate as a Junior Stingrays swimmer, a child must be age 5 by January 1st of this year.  Typically, Junior Stingrays age range is from 5-7 years old. Each child must be able to pass a Swim Test which is to "jump into deep water, recover, swim freestyle the width of our diving well and tread water for 1 minute".

Bay Club Rolling Hills Swim School offers year round private and small group swim lessons for non-swimmers and those that want to prepare for our Junior Stingrays program.

Junior Stingrays Parent Participation

The success of the Stingrays Swim Team is dependent upon parent participation. All meets and related events are run by parent volunteers. Junior Stingrays families are required to fulfill parent job assignments along with all Stingrays families.  More information on Parent Jobs is listed below on page 6.

Message from Aquatics Director Kathy Towey and Coach Mike Maritzen

January 2024

Aquatic Director’s Welcome

The Bay Club Rolling Hills is very excited to once again have the Stingrays Swim Team back in the water! Last year was a huge success with hosting home meets for the first time since Covid and being in charge of planning and running the All Stars Meet. We are looking forward to another great season! This is a wonderful program for children 5 to 18 years old to learn and improve their swimming skills and make new friends but also enjoy fun times out of the pool with teammates and Family at various events. Family members will make new friends as well.

We are thrilled by the quality of coaches we will have for this year’s team. Our coaching staff will be led by Mike Maritzen. He is looking forward to meeting all the swimmers and families. We value Coach Mike's passion for swimming and look forward to a fun and successful season! He will be supported by two excellent assistant coaches, Lou Rigney, a former 10-year Stingray Head Coach and Karen Miller, a seasoned swimmer and swim coach.

The Bay Club Rolling Hills Stingrays Swim Team seeks to nurture a love of our sport of competitive swimming through community spirit, teamwork, leadership and good sportsmanship with the support and involvement of the swimmer’s family. From this process we aim to teach children a fit and healthy lifestyle, mutual respect, and power of teamwork. The results will be not just individual achievement but the notion that we did this together and the feeling that "I'm part of something special and significant.”

We are a Parent/Family run program, so your participation and involvement are required and valued. The environment that we have created for our swimmers and their families is intended to be a supportive one. With the quality of the coaching staff, we are trying to ensure that your child(ren) is/are coached in a professional, yet caring manner.

I am so happy that you are a part of our Team and can’t wait to see you poolside!

Stingrays Rule the Pool! Go Stingrays!

Kathy Towey

                                                          Coach Mike’s Welcome

I’m looking forward to the 2024 season and hope we can continue to build the Mighty Stingrays into a great team and have fun doing it. Here is some of my philosophy in coaching:

1. To provide opportunities for social and emotional development.

2.To furnish a wholesome and worthwhile physical and recreational outlet.

3.To teach sportsmanship and promote team spirit and pride.

4.To instill good health habits.

5. To provide training and competition to all swimmers who desire it.

6.To provide the opportunity to gain self-esteem and worth by making a commitment to the sport and pursuing personal goals.

7. To instill a life-long love of swimming and to build a program of excellence in training, team unity, character development and family support where every swimmer has the opportunity to achieve their potential and compete at the highest level.

8.To develop team unity where everyone encourages and takes pride in each other at all levels of competition.

Now after stating this, I do have some expectations of the swimmers. I would like all swimmers that attend practices to also attend the swimming meets as often as possible. I realize that many of the children have other activities also, baseball, soccer, track, badminton, and such.

At the meets I would encourage all swimmers to arrive early to warm up and to stay until the end of the meet. We have four events at Rolling Hills this year and would like the swimmers to be accustomed to swimming all the events at some point and participate in relays. The away meets are also important, giving our swimmers a chance to check out the competition, make new friends and experience different venues.  After all, we are a competitive swimming team and competing is fun; a swimmer can compete with the person in the lane next to them or compete with themselves to improve their times.

Most of all I would like to have fun! I’m looking forward to pancake breakfasts, pizza parties, games of sharks and minnows, cannonball competitions and possible parent relays (maybe we can throw in a coach or two into the relays).

Here is my contact email : [email protected]. Don’t hesitate to contact me with any concerns or thoughts.

I’ll be seeing everyone soon!

Coach Mike

                                                                 Parent Participation

PARENT JOBS

As with all teams in the Marin Swim League, the swim team would not function without the active support of parent volunteers, especially during the swim meets.  Each swim meet requires between 50 and 70 job assignments, depending on if it’s a home or away meet.  By fulfilling these jobs you will contribute to the success and enjoyment of all the swimmers on the team. In addition, parent participation in their children’s activities results in a more meaningful experience for both the swimmer and parent!

There are work assignments at each meet for every interest and timeframe, for example, Set-up or take down equipment, timers, desk jobs, etc.  Some jobs will count as more than one job based on the time-commitment and/or level of responsibility required. In addition to jobs at the swim meets, there are several key season-long jobs and Stingray social events to choose from that require a parent coordinator and event workers. A complete list of job descriptions can be found beginning on page 15, below.

Parent volunteer hours are  MANDATORY and the Stingrays Board will work with you to ensure that you fulfill your responsibilities in this area. Sign-ups for Parent Jobs are managed through the online Team Unify website, and jobs are opened for signups on February 12. Additional job assignments may be opened throughout the season as needs arise, but these will be minimal. We recommend that all parents review the job assignments and book their volunteer hours early in the season.

The numbers listed below are the minimum job requirement.  You may be asked to fill additional jobs if needed.  There are additional jobs that must be filled if your swimmer participates in one of the league wide events - All Stars and MSL Champs.

Number of Swimmers        Number of Job Assignments

Working jobs and attending social events helps parents be a part of the swim team experience and provides an opportunity to meet other parents, have fun and meet their swimmer’s friends.  Parent involvement with the team activities help children feel better connected to the team and helps prepare them for swim meets.

Because all swim meets and events are run by parents, being there and being on time is imperative. If you are unsure of your schedule or ability to commit to a particular job or date, please do not sign up for that job. Missing work assignments and even being late for swim meets seriously and negatively impacts the team.

If you are not able to meet your job requirements, you will be charged a fee of $100 for each minimum required job that you do not complete and by signing up your child for the season you are agreeing to this commitment.

Communication

Good communication is key to a successful season for the Stingrays. Here are a few of the ways we will distribute information pertinent to the team.

  • The Stingrays Team Unify website www.teamunify.com/recmrrhs is your primary resource for all team information. The website includes meet schedules, a calendar of events, heat sheets, results, team news, and more. Be sure and check it regularly.

  • E-mail updates and reminders will be sent to Stingray parents and swimmers who have registered on-line.

  • Bulletin Boards across from and to the right of the Aquatic’s office also serve to inform you of team information such as Swimmer Best Times, as well as team photos.

  • Ribbon Boxes will be located near the Aquatic’s office shortly after the season begins. A file will be created for each swimmer.  Be sure and check your swimmer’s file regularly for any ribbons awarded and for periodic handouts.

  • On Deck.  When the coaches are on deck with the swimmers for practice, please keep your questions brief and respect their desire to spend this time focused on the swimmers on the team.

  • For any questions, comments or concerns, please contact the Aquatics Director and/or Head Coach:

Team Commitments and Rules

TEAM COMMITMENTS

  • We support the team above all else, which means pushing ourselves to excel.

  • We respect and appreciate our team members, their right to be on the team, and to pursue their goals.

  • We will respect the team members, coaches and parents of our fellow MSL teams.

  • We strive to excel and to help our teammates in their quest.

  • We welcome challenging, goal-oriented practices and we don’t tolerate goal-distracting behavior.

  • We accept responsibility to attend practice, swim meets, and other team events.

TEAM EXPECTATIONS

  • Be a proud member of the Bay Club Rolling Hills Stingrays Swim Team: Do not make negative comments about teammates, coaches or the team, other MSL swimmers, coaches or teams.  Specific inappropriate behavior is identified in the Family Code Of Conduct, which will be a supplement to this section.  Talk to the coaches if you have any problems or concerns.

  • Coaches do the coaching: It is your responsibility to listen closely to all instructions from the coaching staff and to attempt to follow them.

  • Attend practices, be dressed and ready on time:   Arrive early for practice.  A 4:00 practice time means being in the water at 4:00. The coaches expect a three day minimum attendance to continue skill development, maintain conditioning, and achieve success on the swim team.  Circumstances for less attendance need to be worked out between coach, parent, and swimmer.

  • Work towards your Goals: With the assistance of the coaches you should set high personal goals and work hard to achieve them.  Know your times!

  • Cheer for and encourage your teammates:  Learn the team cheers. Root for your team members. Big buddies root for little buddies and vice versa.

  • No Complaining:  While at practice or meets, do your best to be positive.  It is important not to discourage your teammates.

  • Learn about the equipment: You should learn how to use the pace clock, kick boards, lane lines, starting blocks, and backstroke flags.  You are expected to help the coaches set up and put away equipment used during practices.

  • Follow the pool rules: You should be aware of the pool and surrounding facility rules.  Respect the facilities and rules set by Rolling Hills Club.

  • Respect the facilities:  When we are the guest team, your actions, language and behavior reflect the entire team.  Please respect the facilities and leave them clean.  When we are hosting a meet at Bay Club Rolling Hills, please leave the central area near the family spa and the deep end (surrounding the square planted area) free for the visiting team to set up camp.

Always come to practices and swim meets with a good attitude… and have fun!
