Notice - 2025 swim season: all returning team members must declare their intention to return by Feb 5th, at which point the number of available spaces for the 2025 swim season is determined.

2025 Tryouts for New Swimmers

The Darryls require each new swimmer to try out for the team.  Tryouts are currently held on various dates in February/March at multiple sites.  Prospective members need to sign up for the appropriate tryout time slot according to your swimmer’s age.

During tryouts each swimmer will be expected to swim the width of the pool (25 meters) without assistance.  Older swimmers will be asked to demonstrate their ability to perform the four different swim strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly).  Swimmers with greater proficiency in each of these strokes may be given priority to join the team.

Some years, we may have limited space for new members to join.  All tryout participants will be notified via email.  If your swimmer is chosen to join the team, you will receive an acceptance email with information on how and when to register by.

In addition to all the information shared here, it is important to review the meet calendar, job requirements and team policies to understand the season’s requirements you and your swimmer(s) are committing to.

How to Register

After tryouts and a coach welcomes you to the team, you are elibible to register your swimmer.

  1. Create an account. Include swimmer information.
  2. Each parent/guardian wanting email alerts must create their OWN account. During this step, do not include swimmer information for a 2nd time.
  3. Carefully review team policies both on our website and within the registration process, including swimmer conduct and parent volunteer expectations.
  4. Be sure to fully register each eligible swimmer before the registration deadline.  Meeting the deadline is critical, as parents are required to complete a certain number of parent involvement hours, and we need the final count of registered swimmers/families in order to calculate the final parent involvement hours.

Please Note: San Leandro Swim team depends on our coaches, swimmers, and parents working together for a successful season.  Parent involvement is a critical component of meets and social activities.  Think of it as volunteer-powered and community driven.  Do not register your child(ren) for the swim team if you do not agree to fully (and enthusiastically!) complete your required obligations. We thank everyone for their collective contribution of time and energy to the team—the team truly can not exist without it.

Job sign-up info and requirements for the 2025 season coming soon!

During every registration, the following forms must also be filled out:

Fees & other costs

Registration Fee

The annual fee for joining the team is $370 for non high school swimmers and $325 for high school swimmers.

Team Suit

A brand new team swimsuit is included in the registration fee every other year (2023, 2025, 2027, etc).  If your swimmer joins the team in an even year, or if they outgrow the swimsuit, you will need to purchase a team swimsuit.  Swimmers who have outgrown their team swimsuits are encouraged to pass the suit on to other swimmers.

We only wear our team swimsuit to the meets.  A separate practice suit is to be worn at practices.  Each swimmer is responsible for providing their own practice swim suit regardless of year.

Swim Parka

You may also choose to purchase a team swim parka from the team store for your swimmer to keep warm when they aren’t in the pool.  Having your swimmer’s name embroidered on the parka is an easy way to identify the parka, since so many of our swimmers have one, and they all look the same.  You can add this customization when you order the parka.  We also encourage you to order the parka a few sizes too large so your swimmer can hopefully wear it for multiple seasons.

Team Suit and Parka sizing via WhatsApp or in person

Once you are registered, you may join our team’s WhatsApp group.  Feel free to contact other families in case someone has a suit or parka in your swimmer’s size available for use or to try on for size before you order your own.  At the beginning of each season, some parents coordinate a day to bring in existing suits and parkas for swimmers to try on for size, so be on the lookout or initiate that option, as well.

Buddy Gifts

The Darryls have a buddy system to foster an environment where our swimmers practice building leadership skills, as well as, promote individual and team success among our swimmers.  A swim buddy may be a pairing between a younger and older swimmer or between a new vs seasoned swimmer.  Swim buddies are paired and introduced at the beginning of the season. At each meet, buddys exchange tokens of appreciation and camaraderie, such as small gifts, treats, and even notes of encouragement.  These items may be handmade, or store bought, and should not be expensive.  Given they can be an additional expense, we want to bring awareness to the potential financial cost to our members.

Swim Meet Concessions Stand

Each host team provides a variety of food and drink for purchase.  Not only does the concession stand provide on-site nourishment options, each “snack shop” is a major fundraising tool for the hosting team.  The stands accept cash and/or electronic payments, so please consider having both available, as there is no way to predict what will be accepted before we arrive the day of.  While you are always welcome to provide your own food and drink, please remember, NO GLASS on the premises!

Team Building Events

The Darryls coordinate a variety of optional fun-filled Team Building events throughout the season. Events may include an expense incurred per swimmer and/or family member(s) depending on the event and will be shared with the event details.
