Skill Requirements by Age For Swim and Dive

Swimming Requirements by age:

6&Under must be able to:

    - Swim one length of the pool without stopping

    - Demonstrate appropriate freestyle arm movement, body position, and kicking

    - Demonstrate rhythmic breathing with face in the water

 

7-8 must be able to:

    - Swim one length of freestyle without stopping and one length backstroke without stopping

    - Demonstrate freestyle with appropriate arm movement, body position, kicking, and make effort with rotary breathing

    - Demonstrate backstroke with appropriate arm movement, body position and kicking

 

9-10 must be able to:

    - Complete one length of freestyle and one length of backstroke

    - Demonstrate appropriate stroke arm movement, breathing, body position and kicking

    - Demonstrate basic skill in breast stroke or butterfly

 

11-12 must be able to:

    - Complete 50 yards of freestyle and 50 yards of backstroke without resting at the turn

    - Demonstrate basic skill in breast stroke and butterfly

    - Or complete a 100 yard individual medley

 

13-14 must be able to:

    - Complete 50 yards of each stroke.

    - Make effort to complete flip turns for the freestyle and backstroke

 

15&Older must be able to:

    - Complete 50 yards of each stroke

    - Demonstrate flip turns for the freestyle and backstroke

    - Complete a 100 yard individual medley

 

Diving Requirements by age:

8 & Under must be able to
        - Complete a front line up
 
9-10 must be able to:
        - Complete a forward dive and/or back line up
 
11-12 must be able to:
        - Complete a forward dive, back dive and one other (inward, forward somersault, etc.)
 
13-14 must be able to:
       - Complete a forward dive, back dive and one other (inward, forward somersault, etc.)
 
15-18 must be able to:
       - At minimum, complete a forward dive, back dive and one other (inward, forward somersault, etc.)
