Our History and Facilities About Swarthmore Swim Club

Swarthmore Swim Club (SSC) is a nonprofit, co-op type organization in which all members have a stake in helping and improving the club for everyone’s enjoyment. Accordingly, there are opportunities to volunteer at work days such as spring and fall clean-ups and plantings; to donate games, toys, and equipment; to assist with club events and activities, or to join the SSC Board of Directors.  The strength of our club is an active membership. Please enjoy the summer and do not hesitate to provide suggestions to the club management and Board of Directors about what we can do to keep SSC a healthy and vibrant part of our community.

Our History and Facilities

The ground was broken for The Swarthmore Swim Club on March 6, 1955. The Club opened on July 4, 1955 with our largest pool, the "L Pool." It includes a 2.5-feet depth section, gradually increasing to depth for our diving well and features a water slide. Our 400 charter member families started what we work to continue: a family-oriented community swim club for the enjoyment of all members. Shortly after opening, in May 1958, the 25-yard, 6-lane, competitive lap pool opened. This is where the Swarthmore Swim Team competes against local clubs in season. Many local residents use this pool for health and exercise, swimming thousands of laps each year.  This pool now features a saltwater chlorination system. We also have a small, separate pool for our youngest members.  Ample seating surrounds the three pools and allows for easy gathering with family and friends.

Membership is open to anyone who enjoys our quiet, wooded setting. The Swarthmore Swim Club does not have a residency requirement. We welcome new members from all local communities.

Mission Statement of the Swarthmore Swim Club

The purposes of the Swarthmore Swim Club are to provide a positive, safe, and clean summer aquatic, recreational and sports experience for its members of all ages and to be a responsible steward of the property for the community and future generations.  In meeting these purposes, we seek to fulfill the following values and goals:

Enjoyment and Socialization
The Club provides a fun, safe, clean, inviting and wholesome outdoor venue for all ages for swimming, socializing, relaxing and other forms of recreation as provided by the pool, playground, and picnic area.

Promoting Health and Safety
The Club promotes a healthy lifestyle and a safe environment by encouraging exercise through our swim and dive teams and lap-swimming program, by offering instruction to people of all ages on how to swim and develop exercise as part of their regimen, and by teaching and practicing the fundamentals of water safety.

Supporting Our Entire Community
The Club is an integral part of and plays a leading role in the Swarthmore Community. It was established to be inclusive and to promote neighbors getting to know and interact with one another and building new relationships.  The Board, the management, the staff and membership model and reinforce all aspects of civic virtue, mutual respect, a strong work ethic, openness, and tolerance.  In fulfilling this part of the mission, the Club works in cooperation with other community institutions.

Mentoring Our Young People
As a significant employer of young people in the community, the Club promotes their development, not only as a place of recreation but as a place of employment.  It seeks to provide our youth with positive employment opportunities, where they will develop and learn respect, responsibility, integrity, a good work ethic, their own strengths, and their future as good citizens.

Stewardship and Sustainability
The Club will practice and model stewardship and sustainability of its financial, human and natural resources, showing care and respect for the beauty of the Club’s facility and for the future of the natural environment.
