Coach Greg's Bio:
I'm a native of East Tennessee. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Maryville College (2005), a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (2010) and a Doctorate of Health Education from A.T. Still University in Kirksville, Missouri (2015). I began teaching in 2005 for the Knox County School System as a Physical Education and Strength/Conditioning Instructor. After a brief stay, I moved to Blount County in 2006 for a full-time position teaching PreK-5 Physical Education and Wellness. With my deep passion for learning, I pursued a master’s degree while working as a Graduate Assistant-Strength and Conditioning Coach for the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) Women’s Athletic Dept.
I was fortunate to work with all the women’s athletic teams, however I primarily designed and implemented strength and conditioning programs for volleyball, tennis, soccer, and novice rowing teams. My first taste of university teaching came with the development and implementation of a semester based curriculum for undergraduate student assistant S&C coaches. While completing a doctorate, I worked as a clinical exercise physiologist and developed/implemented cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility programs for bariatric and cardiopulmonary phase 2&3 patients. I can sympathize and relate to students who strive to balance the demands of familial, professional, and academic responsibilities. I began the doctorate program when my eldest child was 5-months old and completed the doctorate degree 38-months later when my youngest child was 18-months old.
I've obtained a few professional certifications through the American College of Sports Medicine as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP), Certified Exercise Physiologist (EP-C), and hold the Exercise is Medicine® Credential Level III. I'm also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), along with holding a Tennessee K-12 Teaching License. I plan on obtaining the Certified Performance and Sport Scientist Certification (CPSS) through the NSCA in the next 6-12 months.
I currently reside in Maryville, TN with my wife (Katie) of 17-years along with our two children; Sophia (11) and Jack (9). I enjoy spending time with my family, upland bird and duck hunting, shooting (trap/sporting clays), reading, running, cycling, swimming, strength training, and learning.
P.S. I completed my third 70.3 Ironman in Chattanooga, TN, on Sunday 5/21/23. Even though I did not achieve my goal time, I felt a since of accomplishment given the successful completion of the weeks and months worth of training, in conjunction, with the plethora of other life responsibilities. I'm unsure if I will register for another 70.3 race in the future, but will continue to train on a regular weekly basis.
