Vacaville Masters Have Exciting July Adventures

The month of July was busy, exciting and eventful for the Vacaville Masters. It seemed like everywhere you turned someone was challenging him/herself to some new adventure. The following are just some of the highlights from last month:

 

Trans Tahoe Relay

Date: July 20th

Event: Swim across Lake Tahoe as a team (no wetsuits)

Athletes:

Vacaville Masters Team #1 (Deep Six)

Team Mixed 300+ Division (all the ages combined add up to greater than 300 years)

Dave Stewart, Mark Frazier, Rob Strickland, Karen Jensen, Barbara Nielsen, Karen Sheehy

Place: 2ndin division

Significant notes:  3 teams within 1 minute of each other at the finish after nearly 4.5 hours racing as a team across Lake Tahoe; Mark Frazier racing and passing a team at the very end

Vacaville Masters Team #2 (Just for Fun Team)

Significant notes: Had a pink Barbie balloon attached to them to identify swimmer in the water; finished the race coming out of the water together as a team

2013 Vineman Half Aquabike

Date: July 27th

Event: Swim 1.2 miles/Bike 56 miles

Athlete: Keith Hitzeman

60-64 age group

Podium finish – 3rdplace; award bottle of wine

Significant notes: Made a comeback from a bike crash and hurt shoulder in a Wildflower Tri over a year ago to place on the podium at this Aquabike event

2013 Death Ride – Tour of the California Alps

Date: July 13th

Event: 5 mountain passes in a single day on a bicycle; 129 miles, 15,000 feet of climbing

Athlete: Karen Sheehy

Significant notes: 5 mountain passes! What could be more significant than that!

2013 USAT Tri for Real Series

Dates: June 2nd, July 14th, and August 4th

Event: Olympic Distance Triathlon (1.5K swim/40K bike/10K run)

Location: Rancho Seco Park, Herald

Athlete: Joann Clark

40-44 division

1ston July 14th, 1ston August 4th (beat competition by approx. 5 minutes)

Significant notes: Fastest time ever on the swim portion of the event!

Athlete: Val Blanchard

50-54 division

1ston June 2nd/3rdon July 14th, 1ston August 4th (also beat competition by approx. 5 minutes)

Significant notes: Series winner!

0 to 1 mile Event

Dates: Accomplished over a 6-8 week period finishing at end of July

Event: New swimmers accomplishing the goal of swimming a mile nonstop

Athletes:

Mary Bell (50-54 division)

Michelle Fandrich (40-44 division)

Ta’sheema Taylor (25-29 division)

Significant notes: In just 8 weeks these athletes were able to go from struggling with one length of the pool to swimming a straight mile! Now they are swimming sets in the main Masters practices!
