Waves roar through Walnut Creek
From Coach Wedaman:
The weather finally caught up with us; it was cold. This meet is a senior meet which means that the swimmers in the meet are 13 and up, lots of high school aged and some college aged swimmers. That means that our 13 and 14 year olds had to step up to the next level in their swimming and swim like the big guys and they did a very good job of that and also handling the weather. This being a trails and finals meet means that you swim your events in the morning wanting to be in the top 27 swimmers so that you would then swim it again in the evening, with another opportunity to improve your time and also score points for the team.
The Vaca Wave had a number of swimmers get second swims:
Tim Lee was 20th in the 100 Free
Julia Key was 13th in the 100 Breast with a new AA time and 18th in the 200 Breast
Abigail Mitchell was 11th in the 200 Breast
Francesca Minouei (National Group) was 10th in the 200 Butterfly and 17th in the 200 Breast
Tim Lee also made a new JO time in the 100 Breast.
From Coach Grace:
The Walnut Creek Meet was a weekend of learning. Many swimmers learned how to overcome the cold weather conditions that weekend. They realized having a good warm up before each race was crucial because once they allowed themselves to get cold they raced slower. So the swimmers had to be responsible to keep their feet covered, stay in their parkas, and keeping warm was essential to get best times. That weekend I saw some swimmers rise to their racing potential and remained focused.
Jalen Llyod earned new JO cuts that weekend and many swimmers received new best times. It is exciting to see the swimmers grow as athletes as the season goes on. They are learning a lot about how to take care of themselves during meets, training hard at practice, and seeing their swimming career horizon broaden. They all really got after it this weekend and I was very impressed with the results.
