Waves Roll Through Heartbreaker Swim Meet
From Coach Brad:
The Heartbreaker was a true test of character this year, as cold temperatures and constant rain battered the swimmers throughout the weekend. Despite the adverse conditions, however, the Senior Elite group rose to the occasion, and managed to turn in quite a few great performances. After spending our first few weeks of the New Year working on technique for all of our strokes, the Elite group came into the weekend looking to implement some of their new changes. Overall I saw some great progress – the swimmers looked stronger and more fluid throughout their races. Based on this strong foundation, I am looking forward to some fast racing in the months ahead!
Some of the top performances of the weekend included:
Yvette Arca’s 4 second drop in her 200 fly
Leah Johnson dropping over 1:00 in her 1000 free to go along with best times in the 100 back, 200 fly, and 400 IM
Coty Norton dropping time in both the 200 back and 200 breast, to go along with swims right on his best times in the 200 IM, 200 fly, and 400 IM
David Van Buskirk’s best times in 100 back, 200 back, and 100 fly, and first time performances in the 1000 free and 400 IM
From Coach Wedaman:
The Silver 1 and 2 groups did a great job of breaking through during the Vacaville Heartbreaker Meet. They had practiced being prepared for the weather and to be able to get up and race with a very short time between races and it showed.
Congratulations to Tim Lee for making a Far Western time in the 1000 Free.
New Junior Olympic times were swum by:
Christopher Ton – 50 Free
Alex Harris – 500 free, 1000 free, 100 breast, 200 breast, and 100 IM
Halle Kuhar-Pitters – 1000 free
Genna Lammon - 50, 200 and 1000 free, 200 back
Izzy Mitchell – 500 and 1000 free
Gabriela Hernandez – 1000 free
Sydney Williams – 1000 free, 100 butterfly, 200 IM
Amrit Singh – 1000 free
From Coach Grace:
At the Heartbreaker Meet, we had several good swims and swimmers challenging themselves. It was exciting to see some swimmers do the 400 IM, 500 free, and the 1,000 free. Our challenge set we do every week are making the longer races look not so intimidating. Maybe next meet we sign up for the 1650!
Although I cannot discount the weather, we need to make sure we are taking the right steps in between the races. For example, making sure we are wearing closed-toed shoes instead of being barefoot especially when it is cold and raining. Another thing we need to remember is to eat and stay hydrated all throughout the meet. Going up to swim on an empty stomach is not to go very well when your body has no fuel.
Lastly, the attendance for the meet was good but I was hoping for more of us to sign up and show up since it was a home meet. Thank you for all the swimmers who did attend the meet. You all did very well!
From Coach Megan:
The Black and White Groups did amazing at the Heartbreaker! Even though the weather was a challenge, all the swimmers stepped up and did a fantastic job of racing. We have been working a lot on our starts and it showed during the meet. There were a lot of best times and congrats to all those who swam the 500! I am so proud of you all! I was so happy to see everyone swimming fast and having fun! I can’t wait to see the swimmers race in the next meet!
Congrats to Salome Carmelich, Sophia Chun and Julia Miles on new JO times!
Congrats to Emily Mueller and Camille Arca on new AA times!
From Coach Lauren:
The Red Group did an amazing job at the Heartbreaker meet! Despite pouring rain and cool temperatures, everyone swam their best. We had several swimmers swim long events for the first time (like the 100 IM and the 100 Free) and succeeded with flying colors! Many swimmers got their best times, as well as challenged themselves in trying dives from the block and flipturns at the walls. Great job, everyone!
From Coach Carly:
Despite the cold weather the kids’ enthusiasm made the Heartbreaker Swim Meet amazing. As the new Red/White group coach, it was a great opportunity to meet all the families and see the swimmers in a competitive situation. Both the Red and White groups broke numerous personal best records! Looking forward to future swim meets, I would like to continue working on technique to decrease the number of disqualifications, and kicking as it is so crucial at these ages. I look forward to the next swim meet, Go Waves!!
