Waves Churn Up First Long Course Meet!
SASO Long Course Meet
From Coach Brad:
Coming off of a short taper for our trials and finals meet, it was a quick turn around for the Senior Elite group to come back and race at the SASO meet. Transitioning to long course was also a bit of a challenge. However, the swimmers rose to the occasion and raced very well. Many of the swimmers were able to drop significant amounts from their times from last summer, which is a great testament to the amount of work they have put in so far this year and bodes exceptionally well for a great long course season to come once the high school season is over.
Top performances from the weekend included:
David Van Buskirk and Yvette Arca with perfect meets - 6 of 6 best times!
Leah Johnson going 5 out of 6 best times, including dropping over 40 seconds in her 400 free!
Abby Mitchell with 4 of 6 best times
Julia Key going 3 of 6 best times, and also dropping almost 40 seconds in her 400 free!
From Coach Wedaman:
What a great way to start the long course (50 meter pool) season. Silver 1 and 2 had spent the last 3 weeks getting ready for this opportunity and the results showed that they made good use of this time and knew how to handle the big pool.
Tim Lee set a new team record in the 100 Free when he went 56.78! Congrats Tim!
Jalen Lloyd had a new 100 breast Far Western Time.

From Coach Grace:
The SASO Long Course Meet was a new experience for all my swimmers. Some have never swam in a long course pool or even seen a long course pool before. Yes, seeing the pool and knowing that we have never trained in a long course pool can be intimidating, but I was happy to see how easily we got into a groove and stuck with it. There were many swimmers who swam events such as the 400 free and the 800 free who never swam those events before which was exciting to see the swimmers challenge themselves. Each swimmer that attended obtained a new best time or made qualifying times for JOs and this is only our first long course meet. I'm eager to see how well we will do in the upcoming long course meets! Good job Varsity! Go WAVES!
From Coach Megan:
The SASO meet was a great success for the Black Group! I was so proud of all the swimmers that came out and swam. There were a lot of big time drops at our first long course meet of the season. The first long course meet can always be a little intimidating but all of the swimmers took the challenge and swam great! I’m looking forward to the rest of the long course season to see how the swimmers continue to improve.
We had some swimmers swim some new and challenging events this weekend. Autumn Campbell and Sophia Chun swam the 400 IM and Natalie Feike did her first 800 Free! Good job ladies!
Camille Arca received a new JO time in the 100 Breast!
Emma Gioia received a new JO time in the 400 Free!
Julia Miles received new JO times in the 50, 100 and 400 Free!
From Coach Carly:
The SASO Long Course Swim Meet was a great introduction to swimming long course for the majority of red and white swimmers. While some of the swimmers had initial reservations about the “really long pool”, they all pushed past their hesitations to race in their respective events. I am extremely proud of all the swimmers for stepping out of their comfort zones and swimming fast!
Compared to the pervious short course meets there was an increase in disqualifications “speeding tickets” for breaststroke and butterfly. However, this is most likely due to the fact that this was the first long course meet for most of the swimmers. Proper technique/skill development in practice and more experience swimming long course will in the future contribute to the goal of fewer “speeding tickets”.
Congratulations to all the swimmers for whom this was their first long course meet and to Rylie for dropping 33 seconds off her 50 freestyle from last years’ time!!
Go Waves!
