High School Swimmers Cap Off Season at Sections and Davis Meets!

CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Meet

The CIF Sac-Joaquin Section meet is the culmination of the high school swim season. It brings together hundreds of swimmers from the Northern California area in one of the fastest swim meets that our area hosts. The swimmers of the Senior Elite group had to earn qualifying times for this meet in order to attend and were representing their respective high schools during competition. The Vaca Swim Team swimmers did an amazing job at this meet! Our swimmers dropped tons of time and placed extremely well in the finals, earning both points for their high school team and new best times for themselves.

The format of the meet is to host the girls’ preliminary events on Thursday, the boys’ preliminary events on Friday, and then a combined finals on Saturday. Thursday and Friday the Vaca swimmers recorded almost 100% best times! Some highlights from prelims include:

Yvette Arca dropping almost 3 seconds in her 200 IM.

Leah Johnson dropping over a second in her 100 fly.

Abby Mitchell dropping 2 seconds in her 100 fly.

Ari Sweany dropping over 5 seconds in her 500 free and qualifying 9th for finals.

Lauren Chun making finals for both 200 IM and 100 back.

Julia Key dropping time in both her events and making finals in 100 breast.

Coty Norton dropping 3 seconds in his 200 free and 3.5 in his 500 free and making finals in both.

David Van Buskirk dropping almost 5 seconds in the 200 IM and over a second in the 100 breast and making finals for both events.

On Saturday, our swimmers came back to race in the finals against the top swimmers in the section. While not quite as successful as we were in prelims, there were still some amazing swims from our Senior Elite swimmers.

Coty Norton matched his best time from prelims in the 200 free and finished 5th overall in the freshman/sophomore division. His 500 free was really a great race – he dropped ANOTHER 4 seconds off of his prelim time and finished 2nd overall for frosh/sophs!

Lauren Chun dropped almost a half second in her 100 back and finished 6th in the frosh/soph division!

Ari Sweany finished 10th in the 500 free, also in the frosh/soph division.

David Van Buskirk was 8th in the 200 IM and 6th in the 100 breast, also both in the frosh/soph division.

Congratulations to all of our CIF Section competitors!

Post-Sections Meet at Davis

The day after high school sections, the high school swimmers returned to competition, this time back under the banner of our team. This meet is an excellent opportunity to take advantage of their taper and race fast in events not offered in the high school program. Our swimmers turned up ready to race and had another fantastic day, earning 13 best times out of 18 swims! To come in and race fast on what ended up being the 4th day of competition was truly impressive.

Highlights from the day include:

Alyssa Bunting earning best times in both the 100 and 200 back.

Tiffany Buss dropping almost a second in the 100 breast.

Leah Johnson with two big swims – dropping time in her 200 fly and breaking the 1:00 barrier for the first time in the 100 free with a 58.90!

Julia Key dropped almost 3 seconds in her 200 breast.

Abby Mitchell with a lightning fast 56.5 in her 100 free and an 8 second drop in the 200 free to go 2:01!

Coty Norton dropping in both the 200 IM and 100 fly.

David Van Buskirk with an 8 second drop in the 500 free!

Again, congratulations to all of our high school swimmers on their fantastic performances! Now it’s on to long course season!
