Vaca Swimmers Making Waves in Alcatraz Open Water!
Several Vaca swimmers participated in the 19th annual Alcatraz Invitational on Sunday. This event is a 1.25 mile swim in the open waters of the San Francisco Bay. Braving waters with temperatures in the low 60s, the rough, choppy waves, and a field of over 1000 participants, three Vaca swimmers turned in amazing performances in the non-wet suit division (swimmers are divided up into divisions based on their decision to wear or not wear a wet suit for this event).
Sixteen year old Ari Sweany, a swimmer in the Senior Elite Group, outpaced all of the other swimmers to capture first place for the non-wetsuit division! Just a bit behind her, and finishing in second place was masters swimmer, and former Vaca Wave swimmer, Kady Rubio! Seventeen year old Yvette Arca also completed the swim, and raced to a top ten finish!
All three of these ladies did a fantastic job and I am extremely proud of their efforts in this challenging open water race! Congratulations to Alcatraz champion swimmers!
