New and Prospective Members:

Do the Marlins accept walk-ins?

No. Classes are carefully organized to ensure that coach-to-swimmer ratios and class sizes are not exceeded for safety reasons, and we are unable to accommodate walk-ins.

Sign-up Process for New Swimmers

Please visit www.rimarlins.com/registration/ to fill the registration information and attend a tryout session. All children must attend a tryout session and be evaluated by a coach to ensure they are placed in a group appropriate to their age and ability.
If you can’t make a regular tryout time, please email [email protected] to arrange a different time.

How Can a New Swimmer Join the Swim Team?

Swimmers can only join the team at the invitation of a coach. Please contact [email protected] to arrange a time to try out.

The Learn-to-Swim (LTS) Program

Dress Code

All swimmers must wear a swimsuit and a swim cap. Appropriate swimwear is a condition of our permit with RIOC.

Swimmers 3 and under are encouraged to wear swim diapers. If a child has an accident in the pool, ALL classes must be stopped, and the pool closed for up to an hour minutes while the pool is cleaned and chlorine levels are adjusted to ensure the water is safe for swimmers to enter. We ask that parents take responsibility for ensuring that the risk of this happening is minimized.

Where Can Children Change Before and After Class?

All our swimmers are required to adhere to RIOC guidelines, which include:
Swimmers MUST get changed in one of the changerooms. It is not acceptable for swimmers to change in the lobby or the pool seating areas.
Boys 6 and older must use the men’s change-rooms or one of the two available family change rooms.

Private Lessons

We are not currently able to accommodate requests for private lessons.

A Typical Lesson

A typical LTS lesson begins with a group stretching and warm-up session, before dividing into their class groups and starting the swim lesson.
* Parents are not permitted on the pool deck and should not try to have conversations with coaches while swimming lessons are taking place. It is imperative that coaches keep their focus on the children in their classes.

Make-Up Policy

Each season will end with Make-Up Week. Space is limited and needs to be arranged with the LTS Coordinator by emailing [email protected]. Make-up classes are NOT guaranteed.

Swimmers who pay by the season can request to a maximum of 3 makeup classes for the season. Make-up classes are NOT guaranteed.
Swimmers who pay monthly can request one makeup class per month. Make-up classes are NOT guaranteed unless there is space in another class at the same level.
If the Pool is unexpectedly cleared, due to health reasons or thunderstorms, we will do our best to offer make-up classes wherever possible.

Codes of Conduct

All swimmers and parents are required to abide by the relevant Code of Conducts as a condition of registration and participation at the Roosevelt Island Marlins Swim Club.

Can I Change My Class Time?

If you need to change your class time, please email [email protected] to explain the reason and request a new time/day. Changes can only be accommodated if there is space in the day or time you have requested, and is not guaranteed.

When Will My Child Move To the Next Group?

At the end of each season, swimmers will be assessed by coaches during their swimming lessons. Those students who meet the standards required to move to the next level will be offered promotions.

For students who meet the standards earlier in the season, promotions will be offered only if there is room in the next level’s classes to move up.

Pool and Facilities

Temperatures of the Pool

RIOC is responsible for maintaining the pool temperature and aims to keep the pool temperature around 84 degrees. Occasionally pool temperatures fluctuate +/- 2 degrees. RIOC personnel continuously monitor the temperatures and sensors to minimize fluctuations as much as possible.

Vomit and Other Accidents.

If a child vomits or has a bathroom accident in the pool, ALL classes must be stopped, and the pool closed for up to an hour minutes while the pool is cleaned and chlorine levels are adjusted to ensure the water is safe for swimmers to enter. We ask that parents take responsibility for ensuring that the risk of this happening is minimized. We recommend that swimmers do not eat for at least 45 minutes before their swim class, and encourage swimmers aged 3 and under or who aren’t confidently toilet-trained to wear swim diapers.
If a child is sick, they should not attend class.

Payment and Administration

Annual Registration and Insurance Fee

The Annual Registration and Insurance Fee is a mandatory fee that all swimmers must pay in order to participate in any swim classes or events. This fee is non-refundable.

Payment Options

Families have the option of paying monthly or for the entire season, and can choose to attend between 1-4 classes per week depending on the level. Our coaches recommend that for most LTS swimmers, swimming at least twice a week is preferred to ensure steady skill progression.

A child’s participation and class placement are not guaranteed unless all fee payments are up-to-date.

We accept payments using credit cards only.

Refund policy

It is the Marlin’s policy that fees are non-refundable. We strive to ensure that class ratios and the quality of instruction are maximized and out coaches are scheduled and required to be present for all classes based on the expected number of students.

The Board will consider providing refunds only in exceptional circumstances, for example, long-term health problems, moving away, etc.). If your child misses a large number of classes due to health reasons, please provide a doctor’s note to [email protected] for consideration.
