How do I join the Shasta Family YMCA Sharks?
For new swimmers Coach Felix does swim assessments. They can be schedule Monday, Tuesday or Thursday at 4:30 pm and he will determine the group that is best suited for your child. Please call (530) 246-9622 or email [email protected] to schedule your assessment.
For returning swimmers email Coach Felix [email protected] to reactivate your team registration.
How much will it cost to be a member of the Sharks?
Our program fees are based on the training group your child attends. The price includes a YMCA youth membership for the swimmer. We also offer siblings discount. Pricing is thru summer 2026.

- Tigersharks: $167
- Hammerheads: $177
- Seniors: $197
- We also have an annual Family Membership fee of $110.
The annual Family Fee is charged when you join our team and renewed in September.
In order to participate in sanction meets the swimmer will need an active USA swimming membership, $94, plus any additional fee the swim meet may have.
Do you take Charter School Program funding?
The Shasta Family YMCA has a billing agreement with several charter schools in the area. We bill them directly for your child’s participation, just bring your billing agreement to the Aquatics office or to Coach Felix.
Do I have to be a Y member to be part of the team?
Every Shark is a member of the Shasta Family YMCA. The price of their youth membership is included in the monthly fees. If you have two or more swimmers your family membership is included. Parents are not required to be a YMCA member but if you would like to join, your membership will be discounted as long as your child remains part of the Sharks.
Is the team a year round team?
Yes, we are. Our season starts in August and finishes on July.
Do I have to commit to the entire year to be part of the team?
No, you are welcome to take breaks and return. Our coaches will always encourage consistency, as swimming is a feeling based sport. Consistency is going to help your child understand and feel the water, which is one of the key factors for improvements in the sport of swimming.
How many practices should my child attend?
We offer daily practices (Monday thru Saturday) but swimmers are not required to attend every day. The team structure is design so the level of commitment increases as the swimmer develops and improves. Each Age Group program has a "recommended" amount of practices a swimmer should attend based on the individual's ability, goals and dreams. The best resource for an answer will be your swimmer's Coach.
- Makos: 2-3 days a week
- Tigersharks: 3-4 days a week.
- Hammerheads: 3-5 days a week.
- Seniors: 4-6 days a week.
Does my child need his/her own equipment?
Seniors and hammerheads are required to have their own equipment. Tigersharks and Makos are encourage to have their own but we will always have equipment available.
What equipment does my child need?
You can find all the necessary equipment on our team store . If your child is interested on swimming with a cap, we request that he/she does so by using a team cap. You can purchase team caps at the front desk for $15.

Can I stay at the pool and watch my child's practice?
Yes, however, we respectfully request that you do not interfere with the lessons being given and remain a bystander.
Does my child have to participate in swim meets?
Swimmers are not required to participate in swim meets to be part of the team, whoever, swimmers are prepared and encouraged to compete in all swimming events, distances and strokes. Trying different events, distances and strokes promotes versatility and encourages the swimmers to explore their potential in the wide range of events offered in competitive swimming. In case of doubt, the best resource for an answer will be your swimmer's Coach.
As a parent/guardian, do we have to volunteer?
To ensure that our swimmers have the opportunity to participate in team activities, swim meets, and USA Swimming sanctioned competitions, as well as supplement operating expenses, we host several swim meets throughout the year. All team-affiliated events are staffed by parent volunteers and cannot run without family participation. We are very fortunate to have committed members who have volunteered generously.

Learning proper stroke technique, proper training, and the right mindset is so important and crucial in a swimmer’s early development. Our team has educated and experienced coaches, guided by Head Coach Felix Moreno who has more than 14 years of experience with all level of swimmers, from novices to Olympics Trials qualifiers.
