Serving on the Board

What to know before joining the Board

Clubs rely on the assistance and expertise of their volunteer board and it’s a great way to be involved in the sport. Below are some great tips and questions to ask if you are approached or interested in being part of the club.

The Basics

These are the basic questions that a President should be able to answer. Knowing the financial condition of the club and reporting status is an important indicator of the processes currently in place.

  • Know the club’s mission and how the programs relate to the mission
  • Does the club have a strategic plan and is it evaluated regularly? If so how regularly?
  • Is the financial condition of the club sound?
  • Does the Board discuss and approve the annual budget and how often will Board members receive financial reports?

Board Structure and Responsibilities

Before agreeing to become a Board member it’s a good idea to have a very good understanding of your specific responsibilities and that you are comfortable with them. A good board will work with you if the job description presented isn’t a precise fit. You shouldn’t be expected to perform duties you are not comfortable but a good president will want to maximize your time, skills and abilities so it is a good fit for both you and the club.

  • How is the Board structured?
  • How much time will be required for this position?
  • Do you have a job description for individual positions?
  • Does the club have directors and officers liability coverage?
  • What kind of orientation will I receive?

Evaluating your own Interest

Be realistic about how much time you have in serving on the Board. Below are some other considerations you may really want to think about before accepting.

  • Can I contribute the time necessary to be an effective Board member?
  • Am I committed to the overall mission of the club?
  • Can I place the club’s mission above my own or my child’s personal interests?

By-laws & Schedules

Amended and Adopted on May 24, 2018, at a Special Meeting of the Members.

These By-Laws will be reviewed regularly and all amendments will be considered for adoption at the AGM or at a Fall Members Meeting.

A Vision for the Future of EBSC

As part of the By-Law Review Process, each of the current board members and every member holding an operational type position within the club was asked to draft their job summary during the 2016-2017 Swim Season.

In an effort to promote healthy succession for the future of the club the Board asks that you review the attached summaries and consider becoming or mentoring with a Board Member to ensure the club is in good hands moving forward.

If you are interested in a position, please contact the current position holder and discuss the details with them.  Your expression of interest to a Board/ Operational position may be forwarded to the EBSC Secretary.

All Board and Operational positions are open to nomination each year prior to the AGM.  Vacant positions will be highlighted.  Voting for Board Membership will take place at the AGM
