The Stanley Cup playoffs of Age Group swimming has begun. Hyack placed 4 swimmers through into finals. The day started early enough heading to the San Diego airport at 430 a.m. It was a smooth trip to Guadalajara by 1130 our time (130 local). The Canadian reception team met us at the airport where we received our accreditations and a police escort for the 30 minute drive through the bustling traffic to the Village. Well it's day 5 here and we have swum over 60,000 meters. Both Sherry and Igor have held up well. Sherry has been training very hard to be ready for her events at Pan Am's. Outside of the first practice when we arrived she has been swimming steadily over 7k per workout long course. To entertain ourselves outside of the sunny training weather we have had "team dinners" with chef Mark, who has hit the jackpot in particular with the post morning workout breakfast. Hyack closes the age group nationals with 5 finals and some very good morning efforts. It has become very apparent that the swimmers who are most prepared to swim at this level have been an integral part of the overall program starting in September. From the meet schedule and attending the tough away travel meets to being awake for practice in the morning, the reality is that often very little separates swimmers at the finish wall. Sherry Liu has qualified for the XVI Pan American Games held in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. She was a silver medalist in the 800 Free at Canadian Summer Nationals 2011 and earned herself a very good spot! Congrats !! Coach Mark Bottrill has also been selected to be part of the XVI Pan Am Games team. Congrats as well !!
